After waiting with bated breath for an announcement from last week, I've now heard from the publishing company considering my proposal that the selection committee board meeting has been delayed until the end of this month - September.

It seemed to cause the editor a bit of angst that they were delaying the Fall 2009 titles decisions to this degree and made me wonder:

Is there a season for this with every publisher and is it the same for everyone? Does it normally take every bit of a year from the decision to execution - publication - or if they meet a month or two late does that matter? What are your experiences?

I'm wondering out of curiousity, but also because I've waited for several months for this decision and wonder what my chances are, at this stage, of interesting another publisher for "Fall 2009" publication, should this publisher decide to pass. I'm actually very optimistic about my chances with this publisher, but wanting to anticipate. I haven't finished the book, but do plan on doing so before the end of the year.

Thanks.

Hi Bluestone,
Yes, there are two seasons in book publishing: spring and fall. Usually spring is April to September, and Fall is October to March (some houses vary by a month on either side, but this is generally the breakdown). I would imagine the reason the editor is having angst about delaying decisions on Fall 09 titles is that it only gives her 11 months from negotiating contracts to having final products out the door (fall books are usually pushed for late September/early October releases so they are in bookstores for the Christmas rush. A November book release is too late for Christmas, for example, and very few books are released in December because the selling season pretty much over. And remember that even a "rushed" book usually still takes months to produce). If the book is four-color, it is usually sent overseas for printing, which takes an average of 3 months. So I don't blame the editor for feeling stressed; pushing back acquisitions decisions by even a month pushes all the deadlines that much tighter. If the publisher rejects your book, it's unlikely that you'll be on anyone else's 2009 fall list, but you never know.

Thanks so much, Lauri B for a comprehensive, informative explanation. I'm learning more about this business day by day. And now I write and wait... :e2BIC:
