Hi...I'm new, and totally overwhelmed. I started writing my first novel about a month ago, perhaps a bit longer. I'm 32 and this story has been living inside of me since freshman year of college! I just didn't have the temerity before to actually put the story in my head into words on a page. Don't ask why I suddenly found the won tons to do it, but it's happening, and I am scared to death!

Right now I have about 25K words written (acording to the handy dandy word count feature on my word processor). Oh and by the way, we don't use microsoft ANYTHING. The hubby insisted we switch the whole computer over to LINUX, so I'm stuck using some program that is "like" MS Word, but not quite. Ugh!

Any hoodly-doodle. My problem is this. I have no CLUE what to classify my genre as. Is it YA? Maybe it's Sci-Fi/Fantasy. How do I know the difference? It feels very YA to me, but my main character is 21, as well as most of the character's she interacts with. Also, there is some...ahem..blue language within. I didn't think there would be, but as I wrote and the characters began taking on "life" I found that those 4 letter words just were part of their vernacular in certain situations.

The main upshot of the book is that it's essentially about superheroes. I would have thought that instantly would make it YA material. Not so sure anymore. Any thoughts?

So, anyway...Hi guys. Glad to join the ranks!

Welcome to AW. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.

How do you like your popcorn?

You might want to post a couple of pages in the SYW area and let others read the style and see what they think....the password for that area is.....vista

Once you have it written, check out some of the genre forums for answers. There's always somebody willing to answer questions. Welcome to AW.

Hey, Jennasis. Keep writing. You might not be far enough into the story to know what its genre is. Just tell it exactly as you see it. As for being scared, wait until you have to crystallize your novel down to a one-page query letter--now that's scary! :D
Welcome to AW!

Hi there, Jennasis. Welcome to AW! I know, defining the genre of a novel can be really hard. I'm still not sure how to call what I write, either. It's historical, it's adventure, it's action, and it has romance. Doesn't fit into a regular genre, but what the heck? If someone likes it, it'll sell.

Welcome! Many of us are middle-aged or old and overwhelmed so you're not alone.

Superheroes could be adult fantasy, tone down the language and the sex and you have YA. Check out the Forum Jump lower right for oodles of places to ask questeions, look up references and get help.

Above all, just enjoy the writing!

Hello, hello! Love your username. Please hang around.

Without knowing more about your story, I can't really help you label it. Depending on the story's focus, it may be some type of fantasy or sci-fi. Perhaps paranormal. Feel free to post to sciencefiction/fantasy SYW. I'm the resident a-hole there, but I'll be helpful, promise!

Keep writing. Hope to see you around. =)

Welcome, Jennasis!

If it's about superheroes, you're definitely writing fantasy. As to whether it's YA, that depends on the plot content and the age of your protagonist. I'd say just get the story out (because with how long you've been developing it, that should be your first step). I had a story like that, invented when I was 13 and never written till I was 29. If you love the writing despite the headlong feel of it, you're doing the right thing. I'm sure the people around this forum can help you.
