Laurel K. Hamilton

ELMontague

Folks,

I have been reading alot to try and guage my own work. A friend recommended Laurel K. Hamilton's "Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter" series as a good series to look at. She sure has a sold a bunch of them.

I bought the first in the series "Guilty Pleasures." What are your thoughts on LKH or other reading?

Most recent from the web was Venus Rising by Annalise from Ellora's Cave.

I feel the Anita Blake series changes its tone dramatically as it goes. You might want to look at a series she started more recently that has a more consistent sub-genre tone--like the one with fairies etc? Just IMHO.

LKH are great fun to read while sitting beside a pool. Not much use for gauging erotic content (since Anita started out celibate and ended up...well... not even close to celibate). I'd use something else to gauge yourself, but unfortunately I don't know what...I'll watch this thread to see what is recommended. :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't actually write vampires, at least haven't tried yet. Just looking for what's out there and worth emulating. I read "The Gargoyle" by Andrew Davidson last week, it's not at all erotica, but excellent writing. Unfortunately, I'm not that ...I don't know, arty. However, I've read a dozen paperbacks in romance, fantasy, sci-fi. I'm more arty than most of those.

I've actually wrote a story, book really, set modern day, normal folk. It's got more than your daily allowance of sex, so romance/erotica seems to be the right fit. I kind of hope to learn more and see where I ought to be working.

I've started a second, while the first seasons on it's 3rd draft before I clean it. Maybe some of what I learn here could be used there. Any suggestions are welcome.

As for this thread, a reading list would be wonderful.

The Merry Gentry series, starting with A Kiss of Shadows. I believe it's finished now--at least it better be with book 6. If it's not, I'm going to be greatly upset.

DecemberQuinn - I would be happy to learn from either. My own book doesn't exactly have a HEA, but it's also not raw, kind of somewhere in between. The second effort will have an HEA. So, my reading list should be varied. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear about them.

DeleyanLee - The Merry Gentry series is also Laurel K. Hamilton, or is it a different author.

I don't read much straight-up erotica, but for erotic romance you might want to try the heavy hitters first; Angela Knight, Lora Leigh, Christine Warren...all good starts for erorom. If you're buying from EC you could try my CP Anna J Evans, or Sherrill Quinn or Christine D'Abo.

It's Hamilton. And, might I add, the earlier books are some of the best Fantasy I've read in 20 years. It might be Erotic Fantasy, but it was really good Fantasy.
