Okay, last time I posted (on the old prologue thread) I didn't make any friends so I don't know how this will be received. But hopefully the dust has settled as I have a question that I'm seeking advice on.

Today I received a rejection from an agent on my mainstream novel. I'd originally had a previous rejection on a mystery novel from a different agent at the same agency. THAT agent (though she declined representing me) did send a very encouraging response. The only reason I didn't approach her again with my new work was that it was a completely different genre, which seemed more suited to the agent who rejected me today. Now THIS agent referred me back to the first agent, that I should submit my current work to her. My fear is that the (mystery) agent might feel slighted that I chose a different agent for my second submission. I'm also wondering, why didn't the second agent just refer my work directly to the first agent? Presumably they're in the same office, or is that a breach of protocol. (Don't know as I'm still an unpublished novelist; don't know all the inner workings) Should I bother resubmitting my mainstream novel to the original agent I dealt with at that agency? Am I wasting my time to think she might consider my work? I presume that if I do send it in, I should reference the "referral" I received from the second agent. But I don't want to come off as "presumptuous."

As for the brouhaha with my initial posts on that "other thread" I apologize if I ruffled feathers. Didn't intend to. But I've been under alot (ALOT) of stress lately so maybe I came off a little snitty. Sorry.

If an agent referred you to send it to another agent then SEND IT to them.. LOL Agents represent all different kinds of genres usually and they don't get their feelings hurt, well maybe if you called them names, but still.

SEND IT!!! :D

Send. Absolutely. The worst anyone can say is "no". (Well, "this sucks and you'll never be published" but I'd suggest merely interpreting something like that as a no.) It's a great hook. "So and so suggested I send this to you." If you're worried, you could always put something in your cover letter about how you'd been concerned that this wasn't Agent Mystery's cuppa, but Agent Mainstream referred, and you'd be pleased as punch to send Agent Mystery your MS since she was so encouraging in the past. Or somesuch.

I do strongly suggest that if you're worried about it, run it (with explanation) over to the Share Your Work forum, Query Letters thread, and let some folks have a go at helping you polish it.

If all the first agent ever saw from you was a query (not a partial or full) and more than a couple of weeks have passed, the odds are the first agent won't remember you at all. Quit worrying.

Protocol varies from one agency to another. Sometimes they will simply forward it, sometimes they will advise you to do it yourself.

Don't worry, no one will be offended. Agents take it for granted that you're querying all over the place and that they aren't likely to be the first one to get it. Just don't rub their noses in it.

And if you haven't already, any apologies should be made on the original thread. This is a huge forum and the offended parties aren't likely to see it here.

Nearly 15 hours later... Have you sent it yet?

Not yet, but I'm going to, today. :D I had some important family matters to attend to first.

Thanks for the replies and encouragement everyone. I knew I had to send it all along, just needed someone to hold my hand.

Sent. Fingers crossed.
Good for you!

Now...keep writing on something else. Start another novel, do a short story, something. Don't just sit there thinking about it. Put that energy into another work.

So that when the agent calls and asks what else you're working on, you have a good, enthusiastic answer.

No problem there, Jeanne. I'm putting the finishing touches on a children's chapter book that I should complete sometime this fall. I've also got my next novel, with 80 some pages written, waiting in the wings, and another partially written novel after that (sometimes I get ideas and just start writing for awhile, until I set them aside to finish my current projects; it's important to FINISH things, but it's nice to know I have something else waiting in line.) I also haven't given up on my mystery novel which I'm still shopping, and I have ideas for a non-fiction book and a collection of my short stories too, so I have plenty to keep me busy. Thanks for the encouragement.

Now that you've got a referal, send it for sure!

You can make mention that you originally sent it to the previous agent as you through it was more suited to what she was after if you wish, but it probably doesn't really matter.

I read something recently: never apologise in a submission letter! Keep it positive.

cheers
Sam
