Just thought maybe we could use a separate thread about now, a spin off from the 500 Words a Day thread, to generate a bit of excitement for NaNoWriMo 2008.

I have no personal success story to share. Took a stab at it in 2005, hit somewhere in the neighborhood of 25K. It was fun, and ultimately was a kick start to get me back into writing on a more regular basis.

For those of you who haven't heard of NaNoWriMo, the concept is relatively simple. Write a 50K word novel in 30 days. No cheating. You can plot and outline and create characters to your hearts content, but the actual writing of the manuscript does not begin until 12:01 am Saturday, November 1st...which may be difficult for those of us celebrating Halloween on Friday night this year.

I had a blast with the NaNoWriMo message boards and forums three years ago. It's kind of like Absolute Write TIMES TEN. Kind of.

Newbies should familiarize themselves with the NaNoWriMo FAQ.

Let's post some of our past experiences! I for one am up for this year's challenge!

I've done NaNo three years in a row, but only "won" the first year. I still haven't gone back and straightened out that chaotic mess. LOL. With the emphasis on words written, the only logical thing to do when you've veered off onto the wrong track is to ignore what you've already written, without erasing, and and continue onto the right one--thus the chaos.

I'd like to try it again this year, but have a friend arriving from Germany to spend the last week of November and first week of December with me--and I have to cook Thanksgiving dinner. So I'll probably take the plunge, knowing (again) that I will not finish. I wish Chris Baty would do it in some other month! whine, whine. . .

I'm in. Be sure to also look at the AW NaNoWriMo subforum under Writing Exercises, Prompts, and Games, plus someone usually sets up an AW thread on the nanowrimo.org site.

My current plan is to rewrite my original NaNo attempt. I never finished the story and my fantasy universe has changed enough to make what I wrote three years ago basically 50,000 words of outline.

Good luck to everyone planning to NaNo!

I'm in! :partyguy:

I'm getting twitchy fingers waiting. I did it last year, and won word-count wise, but the book's going to need a major overhaul for plot/structure issues. This year I'm doing a good bit more prep on plot, character logic, worldbuilding, etc., and having a blast with it -- overriding any writing at the moment because this is the story I'm interested in, and I don't have anything else of significance that's writing-ready. All sorts of cool new toys in the worldbuilding, though. :D

Ditto! And I'm not going to do anything with that story either. It turned out to be a short story stretched into a 52 000 novel - and I just don't love the story enough to shave off the, oh, 47 000 superfluous words.

I love the excitement and the energy I get from sharing this writing experience with like minded writers. It's a real buzz. I'm still in touch with a couple of the friends I made during that first year. One is a Californian Starbucks addict and the other a published Norwegian childrens' books writer.

That said, I am not doing Nano this year. I don't want to start on a new story in the middle of this WIP, and I don't wanna jeopardize this WIP by nanoing it. I am, for once, producing somewhat quality stuff which I think will have a fighting chance being published some day, so I'm sticking with what has worked for it so far: a slow and tedious process of longhand and transcribing with edits.

But I will, of course, be rooting for you all, and providing you with fresh pots of e-coffee from my quite corner of the writing world. :D

I'm a hardcore NaNo addict. I'm sure this year will be no exception.

I did it for the first time last year, and petered out at around 25k. So, I got a novella out of it, basically, and the longest work I've ever written. I wasn't very well prepared, I have to admit.

This year, it's on like Donkey Kong! I'm planning away, and I hope to actually get the 50k. Maybe more, if I can manage it. :D

Last year I was too focused on my WIP to get sucked in.

This year I'm already plotting for NaNo. Should be fun, and my first WIP has always been open to a sequel (though I've only recently embraced the idea of ever writing a sequel).

NaNo!

My NaNo mods have already been in contact, in fact, I went to one's birthday party last weekend, we like each other that much. They're bugging me about outline parties and sending me inspirational emails (blech). But I'll do it anyway. ;)

Oh Soccer Mooooooooom! There's a twenty and two used juice boxes in it for ya if you'll do my outliiiiiiiiiiine. :D

I tell ya, she's a wonder. I lost $10 last year thinking she'd never use the crazy 30 page outline. I just read her now ready-for-prime-time MS from NaNo and it's awwwwwwwwesome!

I did Nano in '05 and reached 50,000. I'm not sure why I never participated again. I am definitely doing it this year though! I'm even, should I say it, looking forward to it! ;)

I did it last year for the first time ever, and reached about 75K. I merged that story with my first WIP (I wrote the NaNo as a sequel but later thought there were many fine elements in there that should've been in the first story).
Though I think NaNo is great to get you going on something, this year I will probably stay away from it: a second WIP to work on, and an action thriller series on my blog. And last year I didn't have a day job, now I do.
