We all get into ruts from time to time (See the Slug thread in Rejection/Dejection)

So when you are in a rut (or not) what movies do you like to watch.

More specifically, WHAT MOVIES INSPIRE YOU TO WRITE!!!

Doesn't matter if the movie is about writing or not. What movies gives you the inspiration to put your heart and soul into a work of art?

For me,

1) Hustle and Flow
2) Just Write

Both movies have great under dog themes, though Hustle and Flow may not be everyone's cup of tea, I find that it is a very inspirational movie with a message.

Anyways, What are some of your most inspirational films that get you in the mood to write the Great ***Insert name of host country*** Novel

Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet.

I know its was a play originally but it is still a magnificent adaptation. Some frankly bizarre casting choices, some that work (Billy Crystal is a good gravedigger), others that don't (Robin Williams as Osric? Who the hell thought that was a good idea?).

It also benefits from making Elsinore this beautiful 18th century palace, it often gets very dark and murky but here it is thrown into full light with pomp and ceremony.

But it does still have that thing to it that you get when you see Hamlet done well. Kenneth Branagh is a great Hamlet, he really plays it so we see that there is a bit of Hamlet in all of us.

If I could create anything half as nuanced as the Bard, then I'll be happy.

I should add that some movies made me want to read the book (Atonement, for example) and the book then made me want to write.

The 10th Kingdom. Mini-series, not movie, but it's directly responsible for me starting to write. I loved the show, read the abysmal novelization, said to myself "I can write better than that", and reached for a pen. The rest is history...

I see a movie like HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS and I crave writing so bad I melt if I don't get me to a laptop. The family dynamic in that movie mesmerized me to the point of slack-jawed wonder. I loved it...movies like that one push me to be a better writer.

Any movie with authors, especially if the author works as a professor on a campus in a perpetual autumn. The author should wear sweaters and live in a really cozy house with books lining all the walls. It doesn't matter if the story itself is about how bad his/her life is, or how he/she will never get published . . . it still works for me!

BTW I'm being totally serious, anything that points up the romanticism of being an author makes the actress in me want to play pretend writer!

How about the Shining then?

DEAD POETS SOCIETY. Big time.

Hmm not for me.

That inspired me to spend lunchtime in the toilets bawling my eyes out.

What can I say? I'm sensitive... And embarrassed. Many a person was talking about 'Moaning Myrtle' in the bathroom lol.

The movie that inspired me to write was Pirates, actually. Coz it's fun and action packed and just cool.

Not about pirates of course. I just want to have that level of escapism in my books, if that makes sense...

Really, I kept thinking about this and nothing came up. There are a lot of movies about writing I liked, but they never inspired me to write, for some reason. The one that got close was Shakespeare in Love because it made writing sound so romantic. Still, not really.
