I was a kid when I last watched these movies, so I decided to put them in my netflix and rewatch them. So far I've watched I-III and here's my opinion on them:

Superman: This was a great movie. Not awesome, but very entertaining nonetheless. It's not the superhero movie that Spiderman and Batman (Nolan's) has become, but it's still pretty good. I never realized how closely Smallville actually got to the original story that was in this movie, so I was impressed with Smallville after watching this.

Superman II: Ok, now THIS movie was just pure awesome. It's a little dated with the special effects, but it's ok because I know they were great for the time it came out. This one was on par with The Dark Knight as far as "putting your eggs in one basket" is concerned. The whole story just built and built and built and the climax came through. This is a movie to stack other superhero movies against. It rivals Spiderman 2, and even gives The Dark Knight a run for it's money (not quite as good, but almost).

Superman III: *expletive* WHAT A PILE OF TRASH! Jesus, this movie was so convaluted that it was ridiculous. Most of the time I can even watch a BAD superhero movie and still be entertained (for instance Batman and Robin was HORRIBLE, but at least it was entertaining). I ALMOST quit watching this movie halfway through. What is it with superhero movies and this formula where they make a really good first movie, and then the second movie just utterly rocks the first movie out of the water it's so good, and then they just drop the ball on the third movie. It happened with Spiderman. It happened in the original Batman (Burton). And I really suspect that it'll happen with the new Batman movies. Is there some kind of rule that says after the first sequel, you MUST completely shit all over the story you've built thus far and run the whole franchise into the ground? Someone explain this to me. The only interesting factoid about this movie is that Annette O'Toole (the woman who plays Martha Kent in Smallville) is in this one as Lana Lang.

I haven't watched the Quest for Peace yet, but they should be putting it in my mailbox as we speak. It can't be as bad as III was, can it?

What did you all think of these movies?

I saw Superman Returns a few years ago, so maybe I'll watch it again too. But Reeves WAS Superman. Just as Bale is Batman. Just as Macguire is Spiderman.

I was never a fan of Christopher Reeves as Superman. Period. But I suspect that might be my age. I grew up on George Reeve reruns.

And really, I never was crazy about the first series of Batman movies either. I do like Christian Bale's portrayal however (saying this not having seen TDK).

Was Christopher Reeve related to George Reeve or is that a coincidence?

Coincidence.

And regarding your question of if part IV can be as bad as part III: Yes it can be. Worse in fact. View at your own risk...

Well, I *kinda* remember it I think.

This is the one where Lex makes a clone from Superman's DNA, right?

If so, then it's not as bad as III was. It may not be good, but not nearly as bad as III.

I'm just wondering how IV even got made. III was so terrible that you'd have think they'd have stopped with it.

Anybody seen the director's cut of Superman II that came out a couple of years ago?

A good chunk of the footage that got shown in theaters was filmed by Richard Donner at the time he was filming Superman I, but he had a falling out with the producers between I & II, so the editing and some of the story was done by <somebody else>. Back a year or two ago they had Donner come back in and redo it his way.

And yes, Superman IV was in fact worse than Superman III. Hard to believe but true.

The same reason other bad movies get sequels: they made money.

Fans didn't know that III was going to be awful, and Richard Pryor was still a bankable star back then. II made money, so III got made. And apparently III made enough money, awful or not, to warrant IV (which was an unintentionally hilarious movie).

I agree with the general consensus. I saw all of them when they came to the theatre.

Superman: The Movie -- great fun. The tag "you'll believe a man can fly" was brilliant and the movie lived up to it.

Superman II: even more fun. Terence Stamp was to that era what Heath Ledger is now; the best movie villain ever.

Superman III: tripe on toast. This stinker wouldn't even have made an acceptable Saturday afternoon cartoon, let alone a feature film.

Superman IV: tripe on cold toast. In almost every scene, you can feel Christopher Reeve willing the shoot to be over so that he could run and hide. Flip a coin between III and IV for worst of the bunch, there's a case to be made for either.

Well, for the original batman series, Burton was booted off after the second one, and then they brought in whoshisface for the other two.

Which is then when they sunk and exploded. Then inploded.

IV was easliy worse then III, which isn't saying much. I recall some horrible editing on IV that jumped in plot and left any kind of believeiblity way behind. Aside from the Anti-Superman being born complete with shiny costume and poor John Cryer having to shell out some ridiculous lines, it was only a propagandistic attack at nuclear stockpiling. Not to mention that it was produced by Golan Globus (was that one man or a team?). They bankrolled a lot of bombs in the eighties.

What a lot of folks forget is that Schummacer was the man behind the Lost Boys and 8mm, two great films so they had some hope for his work. In the end (if I recall) the producers pushed hard for a certain direction. John Peters was part of the production team and had some wild ideas that torked Burton and the concept of Batman. He did the same thing with Superman years before it got remade. I read some interesting articles years ago about how he tried to steer the movies into the realms of Camp City, USA.

I can't stand Superman but these movies were my favorites as a kid.

I - The helicopter falling scene was incredible.

II - This movie is the bees knees and no mistake. The part when Zod, Ursa and Non are in the Daily Planet offices causing trouble and everyone wonders where Supe has been...then the newspapers at the stand start fluttering and the Superman theme starts up...chills!

III - Superman turns evil, gets drunk and causes trouble in a bar in Smallville. Then he fights himself in a junkyard. Richard Pryor skis off the top of a building and lands on a cab.

IV - Nuclear Man scratches Superman and makes him sick. He recovers and saves the day somehow I think. I don't remember this one very well.

Finally watched it.

I actually thought IV was entertaining. Something I can't say about III.

IV had a decent storyline to it, it just had bad special effects.

interesting thread.

I personally think Superman Returns was the worst one. The thing that annoyed me most about it was the plot. Everything else was 'o.k.' but for crying out loud, can't you at least think of a semi-decent plot.

hmmm... Lex Luther is going to make an entire continent out of crystal rock??? Just him and his three goons and a crystal continent to take over the world???

Sorry, i couldn't get past it.

At least III had a decent enough plot, Superman vs. Technology. And with the humor, I thought it was at least watchable.

But Superman Returns, it was just a special effects fest. One of the worst movies i've ever seen, walked out of the theater actually mad.

Out of the thousands of Superman Comics that was the best plot they could come up with?

Puh-lease!

Not to argue an opinion,

give Superman Returns the same special effects quality of III and III comes out on top. Without the special FX, Returns is nothing.

What is the follow up to Returns, Lex comes back and decides to blow up the entire world and rule from the Moon. Just him and his three goons again? Nevermind the logisitics of food, water, etc. Since Returns didn't worry about it, why worry about it in the next one?

For the next one, I wish they would hire a few kids from ComicCon to sit in on the meetings and keep the Execs from F-ing up the movie. Again, out of all the comics, there are tons, literally and figuratively, TONS of material they can choose from to make a good superman. There is no excuse for a weak plot.

I was actually planning a blog post on how I think they can save the Superman franchise. In a nutshell, it would sort of fuse the stories from Kingdom Come and Action Comics #775.

I'm watching Superman Returns right now and I am trying to figure out the hate for it.

It's on par with the original Superman. *shrug*

Definately better than III and IV, not near as good as II, but equal to I.

I enjoyed Superman Returns. Was it a great movie? Far from it, but it's definitely worthy of the Superman brand, IMHO.

Glad I found this post... Superman I was awesome becuase it sets up everything..

Superman II was very good..especially the Richard Donner cut--it makes more sense.

Superman III--isn't bad but, well o.k. it's watchable and that's about it.

Superman IV-- utter trash. It's just not the same as the previous three
