Do writers chose their own illustrators, or are they assigned by a publishing house? Does anyone who works with children's books know much about how to start as an illustrator? Do Illustrators have book agents in the same way as writers do? Thanks!

For getting started as an illustrator, the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators is the best resource out there. Join today!
I second everyone's opinions and I'll add one other thing. The large majority of publishing houses like to hire their own illustrators except in the case of an author/illustrator. In those cases, the author is the illustrator and does his/her own artwork. Check out the "Children's Writers and Illustrators Market Guide" on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or any other book-buying site.
