Hi. I could be wrong, but since no one has responded yet (sorry, I can't be of any help either) you might want to take your question over to life writing, which includes memoirs.

And, I'd also do a search through Agent Query and other sites recommended here, on which you can narrow your search to just agents who represent memoirs and consider their qualifications from there.

Good luck!

Hi, friends.

I am beginning to shop my memoir. I need to find the right agent for it. Any suggestions? I really would love and appreciate any assistance you could provide.

In addition to using web directories/listings spotlighted on this site, I would suggest you go to the local bookstores and libraries to do some research.

Find the memoirs that are closest (in subject matter, writing style, etc.) to yours and read the acknowledgments to find out who the agent was. Also find the agents of memoirs you really liked or connected with, because that's something you can mention in your query.

Additionally, if the opportunity presents itself, get yourself in a writing conference or some networking event that agents will be attending - where you can pitch the memoir in person before querying.

And speaking of querying, make sure you have as tight and compelling of a query letter as possible - there are forums on AW that will tear your letter apart - this way when you write your dream agent you're putting your best foot forward from the start.

is it always better to have it complete before shopping it out?
