Hello all!
I have recently accepted a post as an editor for a small press. While I love betaing & helping, I no longer have the time to do so.
In the very short time I've been editing, I've learned that you really can help yourself tremendously by writing & polishing your book until it glows. The slushpile really is full of things that are nowhere near ready.
Betas, beat up your writers. Authors, take the abuse to heart--it's easier to be a little hurt now rather than face a mountain of rejection letters. And above all, don't give up.
