Does anyone know of a good website that lists publishing houses/companies that take unsolicited submissions? I tried checking on Preditors and Editors...but they give a complete list of publishers and don't narrow them down into any categories.

Thanks much!

Do you mean "unagented submissions?"

And is your manuscript fiction or non-fiction?

And why not start with agents in either case?

Fiction or non-fiction? Genre and audience? As IceCream asks, what do you want to submit?

I agree with the OP. I think it would be incredibly useful to have some sort of list of all the major publishers, independent or not, that take unagented submissions.

Just google publishers. It will bring up several sites that list different publishers and what genre they publish. Then you click on the publishing company and they will each have submission guidelines and they will specify whether or not they take unsolicited submissions.

I make up my own lists based on the Writer's Market website and other websites and market books. Doesn't really take that long, and you can personalize as is most useful to you.

One caveat, and this is just from my experience, publishers who say they accept unrepresented manuscripts have a longer wait period for a reply than do many agents. If your goal is to bypass the agent's lengthy wait you may be in for disappointment. If on the other hand if you've got the time you may end up selling your book without the agent getting a cut.

I've had agents reply to me in a timely manner and I've had agents send there no thanks via a stony silence leaving me hanging until I get the message. Publishers often act the same way. Then again there is always the exception.
So you may want to determine your genre. Google publishers for that genre and see what pops up. Then the real work begins--selling your ms.
Good Luck,
C

Oasilhael, an unsolicited submission is sending your whole ms right off the bat, and isn't commonly done with commercial publishers. You will need to send a query letter first. If they're interested, they'll then "solicit" your ms.

If a publisher specifies no unagented submissions, you will need an agent. Most of the "big" publishers require an agent, but there are exceptions, especially with non-fiction.

So, the question remains: do you mean "unsolicited" or "unagented"?

AgentQuery. Duotrope. QueryTracker. But you have to do the digging yourself. This isn't really a Roundtable issue, I'm going to move it when I figure out where.

Why did you move this to "Novels"? We don't even know if the OP is talking about fiction or non-fiction.

Writers Market on line lists p-cos that don't require agents and ones that take a certain percentage from unagented authors. Well worth the $30 membership fee, and is updated weekly. Most of the publisher's websites are there and you can instantly access them right from the WM website. They give all details on how to submit your manuscript. There are hundreds of them.
