Ahhhhh nooooooooooo!!!

I'm honestly about to cry.

They shouldn't even show anything. They should just encourage people to go watch the midnight showings--way more fun!

Hmmm. Do you enjoy great music, old movies, sexual innuendo, and lingerie?

What is there not to like in the RHPS?

No doubt the movie is the absolute greatest musical ever made.

A re-make? I think not. I shudder to think what they might do. Will Eddie do a rap version of 'I really love rock and roll'? Some A. Morrisette squeeking, chirping, choking version of 'There's a light'?

Billy Ray Cyrus doing a country line-dance version of 'Time Warp'?

Excuse me, I need to go puke.

I bet they're totally going to miss the point of what made RHPS a cult classic! It'll be all modern and streamlined. They CAN'T improve RHPS so they shouldn't touch it!

It'll be all Holliwoody! That's so wrong!

You have just intensified all of my fears! Yes...it is the greatest musical ever made. If any of those things you said come true, I will have to kill you. Who am I kidding...whatever they do, it will be horrendous. Morrisette and Cyrus be damned...NOTHING CAN DO IT JUSTICE. How do we put a hit out on these people???

I suppose they'll expect the fans to fall salivating at their feet because they've finally released a version of the movie with Once In A While intact...

Some things just should be left alone. Kitties in bad moods, Shadow Ferret watching movies he doesn't like, scabs on healing wounds, and RHPS. Love that movie. I saw a stage production of it, live, at a dinner theatre. Only there was no dinner, just the show. I wonder why? lol It was a lot of fun. They're using the same screenplay so I don't know what the point of the remake is. Why bother?

Aw, hell to the NO. Why can't MTV just show the original? Or does that require too much logic?

Do the original RHPC rights holders have anything to say about it? I remember it was forever before the original was released on video, if it ever was, I wouldn't know. But I remember the people in control were funny about that - they had a good thing going with the theaters and they didn't want to mess it up.

Has it ever been on TV, or cable, even? Maybe MTV WANTED to show the original, but couldn't get the rights?

And just how big of a "cult following" does a movie have to have before it's no longer a "cult classic" but just a plain old classic?

I might have nightmares over a Country Western 'Time Warp':

"I recall, ya'll, doin' the Tahm Worup. . .it's jus a shit-kick to the left. . ."

Buncha people in Wranglers and plaid shirts waggling their cowboy boots. . .

I have to wonder who exactly is going to enjoy this one over the original?

Die-hard RHPS fans are going to avoid is like it's a necrotic dog's pizzle, and people who aren't into RHPS are not even going to notice it exists.

Which kinda leaves the Hannah Montana generation - are they going to take out all the in-gags, the unsubtle innuendo, the cannibalism, etc, and repackage the whole thing as inoffensive bland pop nothing, as sung by whatever teen bimbos/himbos are the current chart-toppers.

An ugly thought indeed.

From what I remember, Richard O'Brien, author of the original play, didn't start to see royalties on the movie until 1983, a good eight years or so after the film's release. Not sure who owns the rights, though. The play and the movie are two separate beasts.

The original has popped up on TV; I remember when Fox made such a fanfare about it then being disappointed at the butcher job. Yeah, there were some things they couldn't show so I understand the edits on those, but they did a sloppy job of cutting back and forth between the movie and a Floor Show cast during the songs. Anyway, it does show up on Fox Movie Network from time to time, especially around Halloween.

Then again, which is cheaper: purchasing the rights to show the movie, or purchasing the rights to remake it? I have no clue on that, but considering MTV could purchase the remake rights and market it how they chose afterwards?

Y'know, I'm not even aware of any theatres around here that have midnight screenings any longer...

Why would anyone want to remake that fabulously cheesy, totaly campy movie. It is everything that is terrible and great about cult classics rolled into one.

Let's not get crazy, here.

Look, I've seen it more times than I can count and done the show as Riff Raff, as well. But it's ****ing goofy. Incredibly fun for exactly that reason. As a stand alone on TV, it's an awful piece of moviemaking and a dreadful musical. It's greatness is in the theatrical presentation, imo.

That said, while I can't see a remake being of much use to me at all, it may draw in some younger audiences, especially from groups not predisposed to see the original. Let's face it: TRHPS is one of the "whitest" movies ever made. A little diversification in casting might give it some wider appeal. MIGHT. It also might be a massive flop. I won't lose sleep either way, though.

Susan Sarandon decided to sing for the first time in her life and had fun, Meatloaf got to do his thang, Richard O'Brien was a creep, Tim Curry was perfect. Knowing every damned word and being part of the audience for midnight showings was the best.

It's cheesy, it hits all the 'taboos' like same sex, cross dressing, cannibalism, dumb blonds of both sexes, no-neck authority figures, and mascara that runs pretty much like the fake tattoes.

What rancid followup 'Shock Treatment' was, O'Brien should have left well enough alone.

Any so-called remake just won't cut it.
