Is anyone else, other than myself, getting annoyed by the constant crappy parodies/spoofs by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer?

All of them, scary movie, date movie, epic movie, superhero movie, etc, whatever who cares? Does anyone watch these mindless pop culture b-movies? Would the world be a poorer place for their absence?

It's just depressing how movies like this seem to keep getting made, how derivative, unoriginal and vacuous do these movies have to be before some hot shot in hollywood cancels the damn things???

:rant::Soapbox::rant:

Rant over.

For now. . .

I am. They come out every year! Maybe if they took a little more time so there's more material to spoof or at least to work on making them actually funny, they'd be better :[

What makes me upset is not only they make their piece of crap every damn year, but that the US audience continues to go and for some reason their movies continue to be box office hits.

Obviously, if we are gonna kill this monster we must starved it to death

These movies are just behind the Saw franchise in annual movies I hate from the bottom of my heart up to heaven's mezzanine.

That's what I can't get my head around, the people that enjoy these films must be complete morons! There can't be that many morons in the world can there???

Date Movie: US$ $84,795,656

Epic Movie: $86.8 million

Meet the Spartans: $84,021,565.

I love these movies.

But you have to watch these movies KNOWING that they aren't trying to be anything but "dumb funny".

Aren't you worried that watching might actually drain your IQ? That's my view on things, the dumber something is that you expose yourself to the greater the chance that it will drop you a few pegs on the evolutionary scale.

I'd simply rather not take that chance.

I'm not a fan of "dumb humor" films, but sometimes people just want mindless entertainment. They don't want drama or horror or subtlety or smart banter. Just something silly to waste ninety minutes, at the end of a crappy day.

I agree with this. But you dont have to give up quality to get it. You don't have to give up your dignity to get it. My idea of mindless entertainment is still several cuts above this.

There's mindless entertainment and then there's scraping the bottom of the mindless barrel.

The thing is: they're not even funny!

I enjoy dumb, mindless entertainment just as much as the next guy (I love the Naked Gun movies and Airplane... for example) but these are so dumb they're not funny. I can't believe they make more money year after year than masterpieces such as No Country for Old Man. That tells you how much dumbing down Americans have become. That and reality TV. Either we've become so dumb or that our lives are so stressful that we need to unwind with stupid shit like that. These folks will complain about their gas prices and how expensive their pop tarts are getting, and then fork out $10 to see Meet the Spartans.

But as long as there are so many people going to see movies and as long as they make money (millions and millions of box office take) the studios will continue to pump them out like people injecting Botox in their brains. It really is a sad thing to see these movies continuing to make a killing in the box office when great movies go unseen. Have people become so addicted to mindless, cheap pop culture poop?

But that's Hollywood culture. It's about making a buck so if you're talentless but you know what the average Joe likes to see when he has his pants down, then you will be more successful in Hollywood than some talented writer who's just trying to break in. It's really sad in a way how the business works.

It's not to say there aren't good stuff out there -- and I encourage everyone to support these films -- indies, big studios... doesn't matter. Go see the films. Buy the DVDs. Make sure that Hollywood and independent filmmakers continue to make quality films instead of killing them because "there's no money in them." Perhaps we can't stop the money-making machine from going overdrive, we can help the little folks and the serious moviemakers if we would support them a bit more.

I enjoy mindless humor. But I can (and do) find a million ways to lower my IQ that don't involve shelling out nine friggin' bucks to see movies like those.

I'm very proud that I've never seen more than the previews for a single one of them.

I (most unwillingly) sat through Meet the Spartans and I swear I could feel my IQ drop. Fortunately, it was on DVD, and I tried not to watch it by working on a blanket I'm making for my son, but it was almost impossible.

I love mindless funny movies - I will watch the original Naked Gun now and laugh as much as I did back in 1988 when it first came out (I think it was '88 - damn, I feel old :D)

The Zucker brothers movies are classics - and the writers of these stupid spook movies need to really study those in order to learn how to make something funny. Because this new crop isn't funny. They are lame. LAME LAME

One big problem with the movies is that you have to have seen all the movies that they're spoofing, otherwise, you don't get all the jokes. I haven't seen most of the movies, so I don't care to see Date Movie, Superhero Movie, etc.

If you don't see any of the spoofed movies, Date Movie, for instance, just looks like one big dumb movie, IMHO.

I doubt the screenwriters have seen those movies too, for me, they just picked a genre and watched the trailers

Ray has it. The key is to support quality entertainment, whether mindless, like Airplane!, or extremely thoughtful, like No Country. As long as these movies get their patronage, it doesn't matter whether a studio's making another Scary Movie, because it's putting resources into a quality film at the same time.

With a case like these spoof movies--the studio knows now pretty much exactly what it has to do to get it's investment returned with interest. It's not going to do more. I bet to them, it's much more worthwhile to put extra money into an already excellent film than to try and elevate a really crappy one.

I was going to say that's what die hard is for but then I read the smart banter bit. Die Hard has a some classic lines. It's the perfect action film.

But seriously, when it comes to the Movie series, I can just imagine these two morons sitting around a table going;

What about a date movie?
Nah, we did that already.
What about a superhero movie? With Pamela Anderson? And we'll mock the usual, Hawking, Mandella, etc. Whaddya think?
That. Is. GENIUS!
