Short Script Feedback

'K, here's the thing. I plan to get into independent filmmaking soon, and I've written a short screenplay (approx. 25 pages, not in the correct format).

I really don't have too much interest in filming this short, I just wanted to get it out of the way, learn from the mistakes, etc. i finished it months ago, so it's just been sitting around since then.

It would be a great help to me if I could get a few opinions on it, as my next script will most likely be of the same ilk (though maybe not). It's kind of a crime/mystery thing, I guess.

If anyone here is willing to read through 25 or so pages and give a little honest feedback, PM me.

Thanks in advance.

Any reason you don't post the first ten pages in share your work? If the style is just a little better than awful somebody will probably offer to read the rest.

I think part of the reason, or at least the reason I'm not offering to read it is:

1. It isn't formatted.
2. It's an older piece.
3. You've said you don't care about it.

Which all equals a big waste of time.

Agreed. If you don't care about the piece, why should we? You're best bet is to format it. You'll never learn if you don't do it. Secondly, if you're planning on sticking with the genre, why not make this script one you do care about? Finally, just post the 10 pages in the share your work thread. Someone will read it, if for no other reason than they're just trolling the boards looking for something to pass the time.

I didn't mean to give the impression that I don't care about it. I do care about it. I actually think it's pretty good. I've only recieved a few peices of feedback on it thus far, but it's been very positive. I just don't have too much interest in filming it (though, I might).

I might take your advice though. The problem, as it's been stated, is it isn't "properly" formated. It is formatted, to a degree, just not the standard. I plan to fix that eventually, but if, through feedback, I plan a page one re-write, I don't see the point to format it just yet.

If I post it there, would this thread be deleted, or could I link from here to there?

You could link it.

Word of advice, format it properly first. You'll get much higher quality feedback if the technical problems are out of the way, otherwise more focus will be pulled away from the things you might not know or realize to the things you already do know.

That is actually sound advice, as every bit of negative feedback I've gotten so far has been on the format.

Thanks, and I'll look into it.

If you're intimidated by the formatting issue, try downloading Celtx. http://www.celtx.com It's a free scriptwriting program with advanced features. You can import an improperly formatted script (saved in TXT format) and Celtx will attempt to do a proper formatting. It isn't magic, but I've tried it with some completely unformatted movie transcripts and it worked amazingly well, probably 90 percent accurate. As others have indicated, proper script formatting is quite important. It seems pedantic and nitpicky at first, until you realize that the actual format of each paragraph and element has a reason, and helps the reader to grasp the script.

If you want it properly formatted...you can download Celtx which is absolutely free. I use it, love it. Of course there are others out there such as Final Draft :)

If you can't download anything, I've played some with Zhura. It's an online scriptwriting software thing. It has helped me out in the past and I think it works rather well, especially for being free.

Once you finish tweaking your script, I'd be happy to look it over.
