So my question is basically this, where do you start in becoming a producer?
The reason I ask is that I have an interview with a producer who is also the head of his production company. They have been making feature films since the 80s and have a few big budget films under their belt. My strategy is to go in with the "I'll start anywhere" attitude but lately I've been wondering if I should inquire about any assistant producer roles. I'll stop myself from dragging this post on. If anyone has any information that would be helpful I would greatly appreciate it.

Ha.

Ha ha.

I'd start with the "I'll start anywhere" line. Unless you have experience already at least as a production coordinator.

True.

A producer is someone who brings either money, skills, or something else of major value - name recognition, rights to a property, top drawer personal connections.

You might get offered a job as the producer's personal assistant. This can be a good job, and an entre into other areas. OTOH, if he's "difficult" you may not last long in the job. Be prepared to love the person you work for more than you love yourself. Seriously.

Well, there are all types of producers. Associate producers can sometimes me little more than puffed up PA's, but still, they're going to give that position to the PA who's been toiling there for two years.

you start as an unpaid intern and slog till someonelse deicdes to pay and your current boss has no choice but to promote you to the top and pay you else he might lose you tothat other party.

the other tough route being make a movie or two yourself on dirt cheap budget and try selling them and then with those movies under your belt you get to be a regular producer and be able raise finance from studios and also close distribution deals with them. this is what you'll be doing at the top of the food chain. as I said in the beginning it is a tough route... make that very, very tough.
