Hey guys. Sorry for posting another dumb question about horror movies but if you have read my other posts you should be able to tell its the main thing I write. I do write in other genres but Horror is just very easy for me and its by far the easiest to sell.

I had an idea for a movie today and I have a feeling that its been done before. It's a story about a group of teenagers that partake in some cyber bulling on one of their classmates. This student comes across this bulletin board, becomes devastated and commits suicide.

Her spirt haunts the computer world and she strikes revenge against the bullies using cyberspace causing fatalities in a most gruesome fashion.

I am so sure this movie has been done before. Can someone please confirm it before I start writing. Thanks again for putting up with my dumb questions.
xoxo

Hey!!
My first instinct is go for it, but maybe like what you are feeling, there has been something very similar released before, but just can not put my finger on it.
'Stay Alive' is kinda similar, bout teenagers being chased and killed by physco in a computor game.

Either way, go for it! Best of luck

No offense, this is just my observation, but that type of movie doesn't ever do well, and they're just not entertaining. They usually get some corny cast of bad actors, and they're normally grueling and hard to watch because of the extreme amounts of cheesy-ness. As many times as this kind of movie has come around, it's never been worth watching.

Really, don't take offense, I don't mean it that way. I'm just saying... =o]

I Guarantee you I could sell that script, if it has not been done before. Low budget horror scripts like that are the easiest thing to sell, as well as write. And saying that movies like that don't do very well isn't exactly correct. How much investment is that movie going to take? With no big name actors? There is a huge market for these movies and they do make a profit.
Yes these movies are bad, I am not lying to myself about that but its a great way to get your foot in the door and establish yourself as a writer.

What you need to understand is that what used to be "low budget horror movies" -- movies that, in the seventies and eighties were made for a few million dollars or a few hundred thousand dollars are now being made -- or often remade for around twenty-five to thirty millions dollars.

Don't think for a second that the competition for these scripts is small or that anybody -- say you -- can simply toss one off and sell it "Hey, it's shit, how hard can it be?"

That's what you and around fifty thousand other guys are saying as they slam out their latest slasher/horror remake.

I mean, after all -- they're all crap aren't they -- so how hard is it to write crap?

Hey -- be sure you feature that attitude in the logline. That'll definitely help sell it to the producer who's going to have to take your script in and sell it to a studio who's going to putting those millions into making it and then still more millions into selling it.

Any script in any genre is easy -- if your attitude is that it's junk that you can just churn out. It's easy to write a lousy comedy or a lousy romcom or a lousy anything.

If I were you, though, I wouldn't bet, never mind guarantee, that I'd be able to sell a bad horror screenplay -- not unless you were planning on selling it to yourself and making it with your own money.

Sorry if that sounded cocky. I have sold three low budget horror screenplays so far that any writer would consider complete crap. I have written other genres and what I would consider much better work but the low budget horror thing is such an easy sale.

You are right, there are 50 thousand other writers that are writing the same junk I am. The only difference is that I have the connections to get the right people to read it. I worked as a Production assistant, locations manager and now I am a cast driver. And on every show I work I get my hussle on. I network and make sure people know my work. The low budget horror-thriller writing is just something to get my foot in the door and while I am turning them out I am working on more ambishish projects.

Again sorry for being cocky. I can see I touched a nerve with NMS.

Also there are a ton of low budget horror movies that are being made for around five hundred thousand. They are all over the shelf at your local blockbuster.

If you can make it original enough, I'd say go for it. There are literally dozens of screenplays that get bought all the time---have you ever seen anything on the Sci-Fi Channel? Need I say more :)

My point is..well there may not be a point.!!

Cool. I can see how it has elements of these other movies mentioned but it stands out enough to be written. It's third on my lists of scripts to write. :)

For the question at hand, I did like the ghost in the machine when it came out, much like when hackers came out. With that said, both are dated, have you concidered thinking about this film taking place in the future? Maybe even introduce holographic technology as tool to her revenge? I'd imagine the future while host all kinds of wild ideas for the internet, why most horror films these days stick with only modern technology is beyond me.

Point taken -- and sometimes for a lot less than five hundred thousand -- but that market is getting narrower all the time, depending on cable sales and overseas sales (and the bottom dropped out of that market in a major way) to piece together a profitable pie.

Those same movies used to be made for a million five to two million.

Soon they're going to be budgeted for a lot less. In fact you've got a whole micro-budget niche industry cranking out these movies for next to nothing.

And, yeah -- you've got horror movies and "urban" movies and sex comedies and all the rest made for next to nothing.

I used to work for Full Moon and they cranked that stuff out for next to nothing so I know where-of you speak.

But it always bugs me when I hear people who don't know anything about the genre saying things like, "I think I'm going to write a horror movie -- after all, what does it take. It ought to be easy."

And having worked for Laurel Entertainment, which got sent a lot of those very same scripts -- I can vouch for the fact that quality horror is anything but easy.

That actually is a pretty cool idea.
