PRESS RELEASE:
Animal Rescue Center Funds Spay/Neuter Project by Selling
Used Shoes on Ebay
July 14, 2008 - - San Felipe Animal Rescue opened its doors as a
non-profit organization in 2003. San Felipe is a small fishing
village, located on the Baja Peninsula, about 125 miles south of
the US border and located on the Sea of Cortez.
With an estimated 10,000 stray and indigent dogs and cats living
on the streets, beaches, camps and in the desert surrounding San
Felipe, a group of very committed Americans and Mexicans
stepped up to the over-population problem, with the hope of one
day getting it under control once and for all.
It became apparent early on that funding for this giant project was
not going to come from the States, because foundations and grant
givers are not chartered to fund outside the contiguous United
States. Furthermore, Mexico, does not participate in funding
Spay/Neuter groups either. After some 300 grant packages were
sent out, lovely letters of rejection were returned saying, "keep up
the good work", but we cannot give you any money at this time.
With the help of a significant benefactor, this little rescue and its
followers rolled up their sleeves and began the process of
spaying and neutering the street population. They worked with The
University of Baja Veterinary School in Mexicali, which fortunately
was able to provide vets and techs at good fees, but the program
still costs upwards of $3500 a month to run, and surgically fix about
125 dogs and cats at one clinic.
Local fundraising has produced money for SFAR, but by far, the
most consistent source of income has come from a very
successful shoe business that SFAR runs on eBay which they
started about three years ago.
By shopping for barely worn to brand new Name Brand, men's and
women's shoes, at thrift stores in the San Diego area, and also by
soliciting shoe donations from SFAR supporters, SFAR has been
able to maintain its spay/neuter numbers. ZAPP, an acronym for
the Zero Additional PUP-ulation Project, has surgically altered
more than 4500 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens to date. ZAPP
works like a M.A.S.H. Unit. Clinics are held twice a month at a local
school, where vets use adjustable ironing boards as surgery
tables. Volunteers work in shifts to get the job done.
SFAR has also placed more than 2000 puppies and kittens in
permanent homes thru adoptions at PetSmart Stores in the US.
Head Dog Man, Steven Forman, co-founder and marketing guy for
SFAR says, "the problems we have in San Felipe exist
everywhere in Baja, as well as other third world countries. The
sooner we can get our animal population under control, the sooner
we can focus on the rest of the Baja Peninsula, by sharing our
successes and failures with others that work for the humane
treatment of animals, so dogs, cats, puppies and kittens no longer
have to suffer needlessly they way they have as a result of
disease, starvation and lack of vaccines----but we need shoes if
not money that we can turn into spays and neuters." Forman
concludes, "the cost of gas is so high now, that it prohibits us from
stateside shopping as often as we_d like. We try to keep at least
750-1000 pair of shoes on eBay at all times, so there is plenty of
inventory for the public to choose from. What a concept, huh,
Shoes for Spays."
