I couldn't find this listed on the search engine so I'm starting a new thread.

Someone just lent me the series on DVD to watch and I can't believe I've never watched this show before. I remember it being out but I never gave it the time of day.

It's a dark, brilliant, and funny drama. I'm only on season 1 and it's already become one of my favourite shows ever!

Any other fans out there?

Yes -- thanks for starting this thread. I watched this show on rented DVD earlier this year and loved it. Might have to buy it. Very intense at times, and yes, also often very funny. Main characters who can be incredibly annoying and also sympathetic at the same time. Lots of aspects of characters that I've seen more often in real life than elsewhere on television.

Is that the one where the girl is a grim reaper or is that the one about the undertaker family?

The latter.

The other show you're thinking of is Dead Like Me, which I'm also watching now. Entertaining enough, but nothing special.

One of the best shows EVER on TV. Great writing, acting, and just plain weird at times. And funny and real at the same time. The first two seasons are the best. Season 3 and 4 were kind of blah, but it picked back up at the end of season 4 and season 5 was amazing, especially the series finale. Alan Ball was brilliant with it.

Behind you! Boo.
Yes, I loved this series. All the characters were deeply flawed, but so interesting that they grew on you. I also liked how every episode started out with a (usually absurd, but always striking) death that carried through the show.

In fact, being the "dead" person in the episode openers was the most coveted job in show biz at the time. Those roles have also helped many careers.

A friend of mine was on the show for one episode.

Acting? I still must be thinking of the wrong show. The one I saw was a reality show following REAL undertakers.

You're probably thinking Family Plots on A&E. That was a fun reality show along the lines of Little People,Big World. I don't think it's still on the air though.

Six Feet Under is a drama on HBO. Lexxi posted the link. :)

It's definitely one of the coolest premises for a start of a show. Sort of reminds me about how House begins each episode with the person being sick.

No, it's an HBO drama starring Michael C. Hall, Rachael Griffith, Peter Krause, and the lovely Lauren Ambrose. At the time it was one of the most watched HBO series after the Sopranos and Sex and the City. It follows the Fisher family (and their friends, etc.) who runs the Fisher & Son Funeral Homes.

The pilot was a perfect example of how to open strong a show/novel, etc. -- it introduced the characters, and at the same time sucked you right in with a crisis and conflicts.
