Help me remember a word...

My father used to sing a song to me, and the only way I'm ever going to find the song's lyrics is if I remember how to spell this word.

The one line I remember from the song is, "I'm just an alsoran"

Except I have no idea how to spell Alsoran. Ole soul ran? Olsoran? Google isn't helpful, and I'm banking that one of ya'll will know what I'm talking about.

It may be 'all so ran' or 'all-so-ran'.

Chevbrock is correct. An also-ran. It's from racing. This horse also ran. but didn't do anything worthy of note.

I would stick with two words: also ran. i.e. raced but did not win.

It is usually hyphenated when used in the sense of a loser. Song lyric posters may not give a damn.
