Chapter length

Well, there's been chapters with one word and books with no chapters. It really does depend on your book. Mine average out at 1,500 words. Many think that's very short. My publisher likes it. As long as each chapter has a beginning, middle and end, you should be fine with 4,500 words.

When it comes to submissions, that's an interesting point. Smart agents and publishers ask for a word count on submissions if they want you to send some work with the query. If others just ask for the first three chapters, do what they ask. They want three chapters, send them three chapters regardless of word count.

Again it depends. Your chapter can be as long as it's necessary.

That said, personally I prefer shorter chapters. Long chapters wear on me. I also prefer some variety. If every chapter is 4500 words (about 15 printed pages) I think it may become a bit repetitive. My own chapters are usually between 1 to 20 pages -- it depends on the scenes and the how they logically flow together.

Chapters with one word? Hah! There exists at least one novel that has a chapter with no words at all!

My shortest chapter came in at about 800. My longest is just under 5,000. I think that most of them are 2,500 to 4,000. Hope that helps.

Why don't you pick up a bunch of books and see what that tells you.

Whatever fits your story.

I don't go by a rule to figure mine out. I just make sure the chapter has all the elements it needs for that section of the story.

My chapters are closer to 10-12,000 words, but each is broken into maybe 10 or so sections. I found this structure worked a lot better for the story I was trying to tell.
