Does an appendix count toward word count?

The answer is yes, it does, it always will. Your collaborator may not like the answer, but that's how it is.

All pages in a submission with words on 'em counts, as stated in the same thread on the novel writing forum.

No conflict at all. ;)

Put the appendix on the website after the book's published.

Feel I have to take exception with Gillhoughly (editor's hat and all). NO - the appendix does NOT feature in a word count by the author. The appendix is province of the publisher/printer - therefore is irrelevant to the initial text.

However Gillhoughly (and hat) would be correct if the manuscript were a 'text' book peppered with cross-references and footnotes. Then, making up the original work - they must be included in the author's count.
