When I was a kid, just starting to write my stories, I used a typewriter. I loved the way it sounded, even then. Now I'm all grown up and I have a laptop, but I miss the dignified and romantic clicking of a typewriter.

So, I found a way to make your computer sound like a typewriter!

For Windows, just download the program Jingle Keyboard. It's free.

For Mac, which I use, no download is required but you have to change some system settings. Here's what you do:

1. In System Preferences, under Sound, make sure "Play user interface sound effects" is checked.

2. In Universal Access, under Keyboard, turn on Slow Keys, use click key sounds, and slide the acceptance delay all the way to the right.

3. Now, your typing will make clicking noises, just like a typewriter! Not something you'd want on all the time (the delay you set up does make your typing slower) but it is fun. If you're using Scrivener, go into full-screen mode for full keyboard effect.

Interesting. Just like my father has his digital camera set to sound just like his old 35mm film camera did.

Nostalgia, I guess...
