Hadn't Seinfeld been on for, like, twenty years? (I jest, but it has, what? Nine seasons? Sometimes it's better to let go.) Boy Meets World just wasn't the same when they went to college. As much as I loved the high school years, I was glad to see them put it out of its misery. Eric had become a caricature, and once Corey and Topanga got married...well, remember Moonlighting?
But to the list, I'd add:
Firefly
The Others
The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.
Brimstone
Now & Again (not to be confused with the Sela Ward show)

It use to watch it in passing when I was a kid. I believe it was cancelled when I was nine, or something. I never got the fool effect! I have the series on dvd now, and I really wish it wasn't discontinued.

That show Teddy Geiger and Ben Folds made guest appearances on? I think it came on around the same time Boston Public. Gosh, I wished the corporate powers that be could have let BP stay.

I'd like to add Journeyman, Daybreak and Traveller to the list. All shows that had plenty of promise. At least ABC released Daybreak on dvd so although they failed to show the whole season I am catching up on the series at the moment so no spoilers please!
For me the most disappointing one was Journeyman. The show had so much potential and there's no sign of it being released on dvd yet. I really loved that show!

Studio 60. It wasn't nearly as good as The West Wing, and had some major problems. But they really needed a second season to get into the groove. It was still ten times better written than most of the stuff on tv.

And The X-Files should have ended season 6 and been made into a film franchise like was always intended. Seriously. I Want to Believe should be the fourth or fifth movie coming out, not the second!

The Tick live-action TV series with Patrick Warburton as The Tick. That was another one FOX canceled. I liked it pretty well when it came out, but I have the whole first (and only) season on DVD now and it's clear it would have really come into its own if it had had a second season.

Why are you guys inside my head? Loved the live-action Tick, and I thought everyone had forgotten about it completely. I still quote it on a near-daily basis. (Destiny dressed you this morning, Arthur; don't let fear take off your pants!)
Brimstone had spot-on casting, and things were just getting really good when it left; many weeks, The Lone Gunmen was better than the X-Files, in my opinion. And of course, Firefly! A thin thread of hope for a second movie and more Jayne lights up my days. I was totally hooked on Studio 60, even though that last story arc got a little strange.
I would also add:
The Dresden Files
Special Unit 2
And probably many more that I can't recall off the top of my head; I seem to have a talent for liking shows with unfortunately short life spans.

1) Firefly
was way too good to freaking get cancelled. Talk about an injustice.
2) Space Above and Beyond.
Loved that series
3) Starved
THere was a series called "Starved" that really delved into the heart of addiction. Only had 8 episodes but was so 'real' and 'deep'.
4) Angel

The biggest problem was that in season two, they basically abandoned the formula that made it so unique. They lost Andrea, made Teresa a cop instead of paramedic, and became just another cop show. Sometimes I'm glad the six episodes of season two aren't on DVD. It's easier to think of the first season as a standalone miniseries.

I LOVED the show, but to be honest, I saw the cancellation coming. Titus was the only decent character and it's hard to hold an entire show together with just one person.
But have you seen his stand up comedy routines???
He is in the top 5 of greatest comic routines of all time. Seriously. He brings you through such an emotional rollercoaster. From laughing to crying to cringing to laughing to feeling bad then feeling good. It is more than a comedy act, it is art.

Studio 60. It wasn't nearly as good as The West Wing, and had some major problems. But they really needed a second season to get into the groove. It was still ten times better written than most of the stuff on tv.
Here was my problem with Studio 60. If you are going to make a show about cutting edge writers doing cutting edge sketch comedy, you'd better DAMN well make sure the material is FUNNY! Theirs was God-awful.
Also, I could get totally jazzed about Josh and Sam trying to negotiate an important bill through Congress, or help save a pece conference, or watch President Bartlet try and save healthcare funding for immigrant orphans, but when that same level of frenetic drama was used in regards to whether or not the new comedy sketch will get written in time for the night's broadcast... Not so much.
If you're going to do a TV show about TV, it should be done like 30 Rock.

I completely disagree. 30 is pure sitcom. What's wrong with a dramedy? I thought the make believe sketches were good enough to make you believe they were doing a live variety show, and the drama behind it was good enough to make you believe its what potentially happened/could happen behind the scenes of such a show. I absolutely loved Studio 60.

But the ratings were in the toilet, especially for a show with a price tag like that. It definitely did not resonate with viewers.

Here are my nominations.
Kolchak: The Night Stalker. Great series that inspired many others, such as Chris Carter and Josh Whedon.
The Magician, starring Bill Bixby. Died because of a writer's strike.
Tales of the Gold Monkey. An Indiana Jones clone of sorts, but was really fun, just nobody watched. How can you not love a Jack Russell with an eye-patch?
Police Squad. Lasted all of 6 episodes because America is filled with idiots who can't appreciate great humor.
The Time Tunnel. Intelligent and fun show created by Irwin Allen (Lost in Space, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea). Killed because of internal politics within ABC.
Air Wolf. Lasted 3 seasons, but the last one was totally forgettable as they moved away from the military thriller aspect and tried to make it more "sensitive." And let's not even talk about when it moved to cable.
Star Trek. Canceled after 79 episodes. Lived on in reruns and created such a tsunami of loyalty that, well, you know the rest of the story.
Lost in Space. Such potential in that first season, which was darker, and Dr. Smith more evil, than the following seasons. Had it stayed more true to sci-fi and hadn't moved into the realm of silly, it might have lasted.
Probe (or Search). Can't recall what the name of the series was, it was based on a pilot but for some reason they couldn't use that name so they changed it to the other one (which might have caused confusion among fans). Anyway, great Mission:Impossible style show but with all these really cool spy gadgets.
Trying to cash in on the campy Batman craze in the 60s, two shows, Captain Nice (written by Buck Henry of Get Smart!) and Mr. Terrific, both comedies, both debuted the same night in January. Both canceled the same night in August.

I'll definitely concur with Studio 60, Freaks and Geeks and, most tragically, Firefly.
But I have to add Carnivale to the list.
Wow. Just... wow. What a show.
Agree on all of these.
Carnivale was the darkest, most well-written show ever.
Others have already mentioned it, but I'll restate Dead Like Me. It had Inigo Montoya as a Grim Reaper. That's freaking brilliant.

HBO's Rome. It wasn't really canceled, more of a mini-series that got extended, a hugely expensive mini-series that HBO no longer wanted to finance and the BBC couldn't finance alone.

Northern Exposure.
If it had been canceled this year, it still would've been premature.

In no particular order:
Earth 2
Surface
Firefly
Jake 2.0
Dresden Files
First Wave
Dead Like Me
Third Rock From The Sun (still had a couple good years left in it)
And about a half dozen more shows I can't remember the names of.
Obviously, I'm a huge sci-fi/speculative fan hehe.

I forgot:
It's About Time
About some Gemini astronauts that get lost in time and end up in caveman days. Then in midseason they switched it so that the cavemen came back with the astronauts to present day.

American Gothic
I miss that show. I literally ran home to tune into it every time it was on. I can't look at Lucas Black today without seeing that show. I was mad it was cancelled after one season. But that is NBC for you.
Cashmere Mafia - pure brain candy.
This was actually a good quality show. I was mad that they didn't give it a chance due to the writer's strike. They should have waited until this fall to give it a chance. It gave me something to look at besides reality t.v.

A lot of good stuff got the kibosh after the strike. For shows in their first season, especially with a limited episode order, it wasn't cost effective to rev production back up - not after the strike, not for the fall. You would not believe how expensive it is to wrap production and then go back in. Without good ratings to warrant the risk, no network was going to bite.
Not to mention the looming SAG strike which could royally screw us. It's like all of LA is holding their collective breath.

Here are my nominations.
... The Time Tunnel. Intelligent and fun show created by Irwin Allen (Lost in Space, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea). Killed because of internal politics within ABC.
I recall it...
Star Trek. Canceled after 79 episodes. Lived on in reruns and created such a tsunami of loyalty that, well, you know the rest of the story.
See my post back on page 2...
Lost in Space. Such potential in that first season, which was darker, and Dr. Smith more evil, than the following seasons. Had it stayed more true to sci-fi and hadn't moved into the realm of silly, it might have lasted.
I do remember the premiere episode (I first saw it when it was rerun during the summer season or some such), Dr. Smith was some Soviet/cold-war operative who had got on board and programmed "Robot" (the character name of the robot) to destroy the ship after it was launched. Unfortunately, he couldn't get off the ship before it was launched. While in space he, with disgust, "tossed" of the switch that powered the robot, but the robot detected the partially-off switch and went over an switched it back on.
But I thought it was a "perfectly fine" show at the time, I think I was 8 or 10 years old...
Trying to cash in on the campy Batman craze in the 60s, two shows, Captain Nice (written by Buck Henry of Get Smart!) and Mr. Terrific, both comedies, both debuted the same night in January. Both canceled the same night in August.
I don't recall Captain Nice, but I vaguely do Mr. Terrific. As I recall, there was a magic pill that turned one into the strongest person on Earth, one could fly like Superman, unfortunately it only WORKED on the skinniest weakling on Earth...
I forgot:

I remember that one being on during the same season as Mr. Terrific. Not sure you really mean these to be in this thread, even at my young age I thought they were a bit silly, unfortunately I didn't quite have the concept that there was something else I could do besides watch TV when I only vaguely liked the show.
I recall there used to be a great little website called tvtome.com, but it got bought out and morphed into tv.com. There may be more info in the later site, but I liked the earlier one, as one could apply to be an 'editor' for shows or stars, kind of like a low-rent wiki site. I (fortunately!) didn't feel knowledgable enough to do that for anything, but I thought it was neat.

Anyone watch Jericho on CBS? That show was great and had a crazy fanbase. After the first season, CBS canceled it, and fans mailed thousands of pounds of peanuts to CBS headquarters(after a scene in the show) to protest and managed to bring it back for a second season. And then they canceled it again, grrr.
Futurama also was awesome.

Tales of the Gold Monkey. An Indiana Jones clone of sorts, but was really fun, just nobody watched. How can you not love a Jack Russell with an eye-patch?
I adored that show! No matter how old Stephen Collins gets, I'll always see him like he was in that show. Even saved the show's page from the massive TV Guide Fall Preview (remember that? It was the Sears Christmas catalog for TV geeks) to post on my wall, so very long ago in my Tiger Beat years.

I just remembered, "City of Angels."
It was a period piece, set in the 40s or so, film noir type detective stuff, starring the guy who was Trapper John in the M*A*S*H tv show.
I thought it was great, but it didn't last even a season.
I only saw a few episodes of Jericho. Too bad they canceled that one.
I'm pretty peeved they've canceled Moonlight now. There's a big effort to get it back. I hear the fans are all donating blood to the RedCross to get it back- not sure how that works or if it's even true.

Voyagers, cancelled due to the accidental death of its star, Jon Erik Hexam (sp?). Fun show; seems like they could have done something to revive it.
Dinotopia--I loved this show. It was just a great escape for me. I have the series DVD, but the final episode was a cliffhanger, and now I will never know who stole the portal to "the real world!"
Home Front--a post WW 2 drama/soap opera. I think it lasted two seasons. Kyle Chandler was in it. Kyle Chandler can do a great Cary Grant double take, BTW.

A couple more that I didn't see in my perusal of this thread:
Cupid. Not that stupid reality show. This was a dramedy about a man claiming to be cupid, exiled from Olympus until he gets 100 couples together without using his powers. There's rumors of a remake.
The Tick: The cartoon would count, but it got a fair shake, the live action one was amazing. Patrick Walburn at his absolute finest. Fortunately the whole series can be found for free and for legal on hulu.

No. Voyagers was canceled for other reasons. He was in the show "Cover Up" when he died.

Ooops! I completely forgot about Cover Up, and as I read your reply, I realized that you are absolutely right.
But Voyagers was still cancelled too early. IMHO.

The remake is already in develoment. The original starred Jeremy Piven (now of Entourage fame). The new one is going to star Bobby Cannavale (Will & Grace, Third Watch).

Unless it ends up sucking and crushing my pleasant memories of the original. That's always a possibility. The original had such charm, most of it coming form Piven.
