There's a rumor we're getting close...
I'm burning up the boards this morning, but that means I'm in a different phase so that's good. But I'm supposed to be working on our satellite at work so that's bad. Oh well - yin-yang.

Problem is, the title for my book reeks: THE SILLA PROJECT. It is a dramatic thriller about a Los Alamos nuclear scientist who gets abducted by North Korean commandos. Silla refers to the kingdom that first united the Korean peninsula in like 650 AD, or thereabouts. So their nuclear project is call Project Silla. But it just doesn't work for me as a title. Yet I've tried for years to come up with something better and just haven't been able.

I've got, THE HERMIT KINGDOM, which is a name that has been traditionally used for Korea by outsiders. And I thought LUXOR ON THE TAEDONG as a reference to their capitol P'yongyang, which is a lot like the ancient Egyptian capitol of Luxor. And CRITICAL MASSES, or CRITICAL MASS which is a play on critical mass for a nuclear explosion, and when something goes beyond the point of no return. Even JUCHE FRUIT, referring to juche one of their political philosophies. But in my opinion, these all suck - especially the last one. I'm just too close to this thing.

This group is extremely creative. Can any of you come up with something better? I'm certain the title would probably be changed by any publisher that decided to publish it, but I believe a catchy title helps in the query.

Thanks,
-MM

You're right about a catchy title helping, even if it's just a working title.

I favor the one or two word titles. But, unfortunately, I'm having trouble coming up with one for you. I do like Critical Mass. Just google it, though, on Amazon, to make sure whatever title you use, it's not already taken.

In my experience, they always make you change your title, even when you're sure you have the best title ever.

The Silla Project isn't a bad title for a military thriller; it's somewhat reminiscent of The Bourne Identity and The Eiger Sanction and so on.

Critical Mass is a very good title for a military thriller about nuclear weaponry. I'd go with that if you really feel like you want to ditch The Silla Project.

The Hermit Kingdom sounds like a fantasy novel. The others are too precious and/or complicated.

I personally like The Silla Project

If you wanted something different although this probably wouldn't work), could you swap project for a similar word? For example: Mission Silla, Assignment Silla, etc.

P.S. Juche Fruit to me sounds like Juice Fruit, so I would expect the book to be an instruction manual on how to juice fruit, probably written in French

The problem with Critical Mass is there's already been at least one book with that title, plus the movie with Treat Williams.

Speaking of The Bourne Identity, that title references the MC's personal problem. Maybe your title could do something like that, like if s/he becomes sympathetic to the captors' philosophy, the title could give a clue.

nuclear - fusion - uniting the two Koreas - fuse

just word associating out loud; the word "fuse" has my interest for the moment.

Just a thought - DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE TITLE.
The publisher will most likely change it anyway,
Worry about hooking the agent or publisher with an outstanding query letter.

Or a combo? Project Taedong--which would refernce building something and place, Silla: Critical--which covers the old name and something in a edgy stage.

FISSION SPECTRUM

Fission is when an atom is split, or destroyed.
Spectrum describes the possibilities of that split

The fission spectrum of a radioactive element is a statistical measure of the products of a fission.

I see it as a metaphor for the way people respond when placed under so much stress that it destroys who they are. As happened to the main character in the story. As happened to the Korean Peninsula which led to the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War. As happens every day to the people living in North Korea. And of course, the story is also about nuclear weapons.

Sounds good, MM, with how it ties in to all that's going on in your story. Good luck with your query.
