Please could somebody tell me how may editors can you can send your story too at the one time. As the turn around time is often 3 months or more. Can you legally send to more than one editor. I would appreciate advice in this matter.

It would only be illegal to send someone else's MS to an editor or agent. ;)

I'd suggest posting a sample of your writing on SYW to see if it's got the polish a submission needs. No good closing any doors unnecessarily.

I'm not sure how it is for sending to agents and publishers, but I've read from many popular authors that for magazine submissions, waiting around for responses is ridiculous, and you're better off getting more material out there. If your story is great enough to be accepted by two magazines, well, then burn that bridge when you come to it, I guess.

Hey there to all writers. Thanks for the help. As you have probably guessed I'm a real green horn but hoping to learn. Cheers.

As many as you want ...

You can send a story to as many people as you wish at the same time. Just be sure that they all accept "simultaneous submissions".

If the guidelines omit this information, you can ask to be certain, or note in your cover letter that this is a simultaneous submission. You don't need to tell where else you are/will be sending copies.

Don't try to "cheat", either. Editors and agents do talk to one another about writers!

You've certainly received excellent advice from everyone. I will only add a couple of things. When some writers submit to editors or agents who accept simultaneous submissions they omit saying they are enclosing a simultaneous submission. Personally, I think it should be said, but that's your call.

As has been stated, submit to as many or few at one time as you feel is proper. I'd suggest you stagger your submissions and send a few (4 to 8) every 2 to 3 or 6 to 8 weeks. I particularly say this because the entire process is new to you, and any personal feedback you may get from editors and/or agents may help you strengthen your pitch.

It's most important that before sending out anything you research potential sources. Do they accept first time authors? Do they only work through agents? Do they publish the type of book you have in mind -- for instance, if you wrote a nonfiction book and they only publish fiction, ignore them. Lots more to learn before you start to submit. Suggest you go to the library, and online, and learn about the entire process.
