AFI's Ten Top Ten

I only caught part of the broadcast last night, but the American Film Institute released their lists of top ten films in ten categories: epics, animation, western, courtroom drama, romantic comedy, ganster, mystery, sports tales, science fiction, and fantasy.

It was interesting to see choices that ran the gamut of film, from 1922 all the way to now.

I still think that Fantasia should have been number one of Animation. At least To Kill a Mockingbird got much deserved recognition.

Like all these lists, some of this is ludicrous (Back to the Future but not Close Encounters? Goodfellas over Godfather II? Pacino's Scarface but no Untouchables? Really?) but whatever... Were these supposed to be lists of American films in their genres? If so, should Lord of the Rings have qualified? Not objecting to that, just askin'...

Looking at it from the lens of a writer, the Science Fiction category has some clear examples of the breadth of the genre.

Fantasy, OTOH, is a little eye opening when you compare to what is considered genre standards - only one medieval-style fantasy made the list? Does that speak well of the AFI in their selections? Or filmmakers who tackle a variety of "fantastic" tales? Or that medieval is tough to pull of well on film?

Yeah, Groundhog Day as a fantasy seemed to be stretching it. And I really thought ...and Justice for All should have gotten a spot on the courtroom dramas.

Why were comedies snubbed?

I never know how to take these lists. Always a few I agree with but most of the times, I disagree with the list.

They also didn't have lists for horror, historicals, romance/love story, disaster films.....
