Is there a better time of year to send out queries? Is summer a down time, people on vacation? Stuff piling up unattended, that kind of thing?

Some people say spring and fall is best, because summer means vacations and winter means Christmas vacations. I've queried at all times of the year and response rates are about the same.

Whether you send a query now and it gets answered in August, or you send it in August and it's answered in a week....you're still getting the response in August. :)

I'd agree with ChaosTitan: it's basically a crap shoot, so just send it out. True, lots of people are out of the office in July/Aug, and between Thanksgiving and New Years Day. But because so many aspiring writers know that and hold off sending stuff during those times, your stuff has about as much chance of getting plucked off the slushpile and read as it does any other time of the year.

I've read there tend to be more queries in the New Year. People like to make it a resolution, I guess? I would imagine we're all busying ourselves all year long though.
