Agent recommendations?

I just finished a teen novel (whoo!) and would like to try for major publication. And since I've got my roots in short fiction, I don't know the first thing about how to go about narrowing down the field when it comes to looking for an agent for a novel.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I used querytracker.net to search for agents who handle YA, and then I googled each potential agent and checked out their website/blog/interviews, etc to see if we'd be a good match. I also checked the acknowledgements section of books I loved to see who repped my favorite authors.

You also may want to try the 2008 Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market.
You can find it at your local library or book store. It's pretty helpful. But even then, once you find the agents you're interested in, you should go to each of their individual websites and read up about them a little more.

Going to writing conferences is also really helpful. That's how I snagged my agent. I hadn't even tried querying yet, I just got signed up for the meeting with the conference package and I thought I'd go just to practice getting rejected

Instead I got signed by her a few months later. So if you know of any conferences near you that offer the same kind of meetings, I'd give it a shot as well.

You might want to check out the Blue Board: http://www.verlakay.com/boards/index.php

They have lots of YA agent info and response times for each agent.

ANOTHER good thing to do is find some of your favorite YA authors, or YA authors with similar writing styles to yours and find out their agents. It's usually pretty easy to research it on the web. It's usually somewhere on there.
