Meanwhile, back at the ranch ...
I forgot to answer my own question.

I wish I'd written Merlin's Keep by Madeleine Brent. I find the book absolute genius, and the story amazing.

It surprised me to look it up, since I haven't read it in years, and find it is categorized as romance. Although it is romantic, I wouldn't think to categorize it as such. Very interesting.

Trinity by Leon Uris

The man wrote many excellent books, but Trinity is one of the most riveting of them. Not to mention, it is a topic close to my soul, as I am a product of a black irish family.

The novels of James Morrow and Louis Bayard -- intelligent, wonderfully well-written and loaded with story, story and more story.

Maybe if I'd written them it would have been The North and South Decline and Fall. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Far too many to list but here are one or two:

Anything (though most specifically Alias Grace) by Margaret Atwood
Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
The Child in Time by Ian McEwan
Music and Silence by Rose Tremain

I could go on forever....
