I used to love reading Jamesaritchie's posts in the short fiction forum. They were always interesting and informative, but I have not seen a post from him in a long time. Does anyone know why he's been gone?

I believe JAR wished to spend less time online and more time on writing -- nothing sinister, just a time management adjustment.

Thanks for the link, Twizzle. I've missed the old curmudgeon.
I confess that I have not. Too often I could not agree with his stance that his way was the way and anyone who didn't follow the same path was a fool.

That said, he did share a fair amount of accurate and useful information, too.

Maryn, who wonders if she should have said as much as she did

About a month ago I saw he was posting a lot on the ElleryQueen/Alfred Hitchcock Magazine forums. (I tried to get into those forums right now but they must be under construction or they don't love me.)

I know he said he had at least three stories pubbed in Ellery Queen.

And don't worry, Maryn, I butted heads with him once or twice, too. I'm not a fan of the my-way-or-highway type of thinking. But he was nice enough to back off when he saw I did know some of the people associated with Ellery Queen magazine, and that I did know what I was talking about.

I too have missed him - easy for me to say, I've been away from the boards for 3 months painting. Glad to hear he's active somewhere, though - he always gave me a good run for my money!

He was more difficult to ignore than other posters I don't agree with because he was so "up in your face" about everything. But I genuinely think he was trying to help, in his fashion, and would wish him well were he to pop back in and check us out.

And he was never boring.

Thanks for the link to James' blog. I didn't know where he went. We've had our share of scraps but I don't mind a heated debate now and again.

I remember his advice to me years ago on another writer forum as to how he organized his writing projects. I was a newbie and I still use those tips today. I may not agree with everything he says, but I have a lot of respect for him. He's been a wonderful wealth of information and has a practical way of stating most things.

From his June 10 blog post:

Lack of time is getting the better of me, and there aren't many areas remaining where I can make concessions. I've cut the forums I frequent to one, the WD Forum, I'm getting up early and going to bed late, the only TV I'm watching is the NBA Finals, I'm eating two meals a day at my desk, and I still have more things to do than hours to do them.

Thanks for the link, Twizzle.

Probably a good idea, and one that we all can learn from. Foruming is too often used as an alibi to avoid writing. I'm as guilty as the next person. My resolution for 2009 is: no more than 2 hours/week on internet forums!

While I definitely agree that foruming is used as a form of procrastination, there are other things that can be cut down before AW to spend more time writing: my job ;)

I think of it this way: I really do get great ideas for my next story or essay from lurking and/or posting on forums. (Watch out, people!)

I used to get pretty uptight with JAR on occasion. Knowing he's just cutting forums out as a way of conserving time so he can write, helps me to breathe a bit easier, as I'd thought for certain my own grouchiness had played a part in his leaving.

Also, thanks to the poster who put up his blog URL. I've bookmarked it, myself. JAR can be really blunt, but I for one need that heaping helping of humble pie sometimes to get back on the right track.

:)
