I've seen a bunch that'll run of 3 AA batteries, and weigh less than 2 pounds. I'm looking for exactly that, yet one that can access a flash drive. Anyone know of any?

The AlphaSmart is one of the battery driven models. I've got an older one and it has a USB port to attach to any computer once the word processor is up. The "Dana" I've linked to is wireless, but I don't know that any can attach to a flash drive.
I can attest to the durability and longevity of the batteries! I typed the whole last book on it without a single change of batteries, and it's still going strong. Hope it helps. Good luck!

They review very small systems. There are some really cool ones coming out this year that you might be interested in. I'm watching them myself. Basically I'm looking for the same thing you are - an easy low energy consumption machine that will boot quickly and let me write pretty much anywhere I want to. Plus store on a transferable flash medium. Personally, I put a decent size keyboard on the requirements list too.
I've been using my Palm Pilot and a collapsible keyboard for the last couple of years, which works well if you have a TX because you can store on the SD card. Pocket versions of Word let you transfer .doc files pretty easily. If you need something right away, that's one option.

Whether or not these things will answer your needs, I don't know. But my wife and daughter both have one, and love them. I'll probably get one for business travel needs later in the year. In any case, you should be aware they exist:

How about an old MobilePro 900 (search ebay)? It's less than 2 lbs, clamshell design, pocket-office applications like Pocket Word, full keyboard (though a bit small), instant on/off, etc. It can't run off AA's, but if you were willing to trade a USB port, the Mobilepro 770, 780, and 790 can all use this battery adapter, which allows the use of AA's. And even though there's no USB port on those older models, there IS a flash-card drive and the ability to synch up with your desktop or notebook.
And, yes, from what I've read the Dana does have USB ports.

Ooh, new Asus eee pc thingy just landed here. Am liking it. The alphasmart wasn't enough screen for me and palm pilots aren't enough keyboard. This Asus thingy? Yum.
I've used Alphasmarts for a while. First a Neo (worked well, then broke mysteriously), then a 3000 (very low tech, had to bash furiously at the keys to type effectively), now a Neo (heavier than the others, otherwise not bad).
Their main problem is that, even with the Dana, there's no backlight. That can get annoying.
