Your Favorite Area 51 Conspiracy Books (or Websites)

Conspiracy theory fanatic? Just rent several seasons of The X-Files.

I used to be an Area 51 fanatic, but I've since lost all my links and books on it, so unfortunately, I'm no longer up-to-date or have much in the way of helping you.

If you're going to be visiting Las Vegas anytime soon you could visit. It's pretty cool. There's a no photography and no trespassing sign. A guard in a jeep with a gun is waiting for people to cross the line so he can swoop down and arrest them. I've been a couple of times. And I have a friend whose husband works out there. Unfortunately he can't talk about it.

If you go to www.fstdt.com, you'll find a site called Fundies Say the Darndest Things and its two sister projects, Conspiracy Theorists Say the Darndest Things and Racists Say the Darndest Things. The racists page is sad rather than funny and the "fundies" page varies (although they are fair enough to include nutballs of all religions, if they find quotes in English) but the conspiracy theorists page is usually laugh-out-loud funny.

For astronomical conspiracy theories, you can check out Phil Plait's "Bad Astronomy" website at www.badastronomy.com. He debunks a number of things, like the "moon landing was a hoax" theory and the "face on Mars" notion, and he's pretty readable while doing it. (For example, as part of his face on Mars debunking, he includes an amusing essay and a photo of when Lenin's face appeared on his shower curtain—or, rather, he demonstrated how people connect dots and blotches into faces, more or less instinctively.)

There's also a forum connected to badastronomy, and every once in a while someone will drop by and try to push their conspiracy theories. Since Phil Plait and some of the regular posters are professional astronomers, they usually get their rearmost parts handed to them.

I think James Randi has a similar site, but I haven't really gone exploring it. You might be able to get an interesting notion or two off of snopes, though, just by taking one of their debunked legends and inventing a cover-up around it.

This is my favourite conspiracy theory site. It does mention Area 51 briefly too.

This won't really help, but a few weeks ago I was sleeping over at my friends house and we got to talking about conspiracy theories. Her grandfather worked on Area 51 and one time she asked him about it and he got really serious and said "I'm not allowed to talk about it." It really freaked her out, and when she told me, it freaked me out, too.

We said that her family probably has government officials following them around everywhere to make sure that her grandfather doesn't tell any secrets. I said that since she told me I probably have them following me around, too, haha :]

It's a great show. The "mytharc" episodes deal with a government conspiracy to coverup a secret deal with extra-terrestrials, and the standalone "monster-of-the-week" episodes deal with independent paranormal phenomenon that sometimes has to do with government conspiracies, too. My personal favorite seasons are 3-5. The best are seasons 1-5, after which comes the movie. Seasons 6-9 are a bit of a downhill slide, though.

I've been wanting to visit Area 51 for so long, but haven't had the chance, yet. I'd been to Roswell, though, and they have a cool UFO museum there that should give you a lot of information.

I saw a video of some guy (Hogan? Hoaglin?)) claiming there are crystal cities on the moon which can only be seen at special times while on the moon. Video included, but it all looked like dust particles to me, not city lights. Same guy has another video of proof that the face on mars is a face with lots of questionable mathematics. Looks like fact unless you've got more than a grade school education Maybe somebody here remembers these and can point you to a site?

I've had the funny thought that when the day comes when Area 51 is no longer a secret base, it'll probably be preserved as a cultural landmark.

Fat chance with all the toxic chemicals disposed on-site, there. Not to mention, I think it'll be a long time before anyone's allowed near it, even if they do decommission it.

I live only a few miles from Roswell. The trip, in this case, wouldn't be worth it. You'll find much more information online. All you'll find in Roswell is tourist traps

Well, I'm pretty sure the name is Richard Hoagland, and that badastronomy link has some debunking on his stuff. (Sometimes it seems like the site should be called Phil Plait's Bad Astronomy Site: Why Hoagland Is A Moron.)

IIRC, he also believes that Mimas is a space station. Of course, Mimas . . . well, this is Mimas, if my link-fu works.

What an idiot. Mimas isn't a space station, it's an astrolab abandoned in 29,714 BC by the sheebies. Last time I was there it was occupied by a lone caretaker who confiscated my camera, so I was unable to prove I was there.

They always do that.

Glad to know it's being debunked The owner of the videos that I saw believes in them (and similar ones) so strongly, the only way he'd accept it's fake is if the grey aliens themselves stopped in to tell him so.

there's a website whose owner believes that there are forests on Mars and the mars lander was equiped with a special camera that only shows blue and red and not green. presumably so the trees don't show up? Although why they would be green on Mars is a broad assumption. The best thing is there's also a link about the exact same picture in google to a scientific mag where a nasa scientist explains what it really is.

As an aside, i hate visiting these sites. I always feel like they're taking my info down and going to include me on a list of believers and send me stuff through the mail. Irrational, I know, but there you go.
