What remakes would you like to see? And with what inspired casting?

Yesterday I thought, hey, wouldn't it cool to have an update of Pygmalion with Harrison Ford as Henry Higgins and either Natalie Portman or Keira Knightley as Eliza Doolittle?

Or Gone with the Wind with Clive Owen and Jodie Foster.

I loved the original but I'd be curious to see Natural City redone with Clive Owen in the Yoo Ji-tae role, Amy Acker or Portman in Seo Lin's part, and Shia Lebeouf (sp?) in Jeong Eun-pyo's.

Personally no, no it wouldn't. I want my Henry Higgins to be, you know, British, and I would love to see a newcomer play Eliza, as opposed to the two usual suspects for every single role of that kind. Especially considering Natalie has only just mastered the standard british accent, I worry dearly about the cockney.

Remake that is actually happening that I am really excited about: Get Smart.

Ooh! Yes, that's a good idea! Though with a decent script to back it up.

I'd love to see a remake of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. But I'm not sure of the cast.

Can we remake that last X-Men movie and forget the first try ever happened?

(Ditto with the two matrix sequels - especially that middle piece that was essentially nothing but overlong fight/chase scenes.)

I'd like to see a live action Gargoyles. They should get Gerard Butler as Goliath.

Or Metropolis. Maybe Nathan Fillion as Frender.

Or the classic cartoon Wizards, and have Peace be played be Christian Bale.

Charlie's Angels. Only this time, have it make sense. Cast:

Halle Berry
Charlize Theron
Catherine Zeta Jones

Harrison Ford as Charlie

I don't know about "remakes," but "reboots" or "redos" that I can think of off the top of my head:

Judge Dredd - The comic book has so, so much more going for it than Stallone's ego and studio interference allowed to reach the screen. This should be a hyperbolic, ultra-violent sci-fi epic. The only person I can think of who has any business directing it is Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall, Robocop, Starship Troopers). He's built for this sort of thing.

Ghost Story - You can't make it completely faithful to the book, obviously, but I'd still like to see something that captures the original's spirit a little better.

Hell House - Ditto from Ghost Story.

There are others, I'm sure, but I can't think of them now... Although I suppose I wouldn't mind seeing an updated version of The Monster Squad for old time's sake...

Has there been a remake that was better than the original?

You know what, I'm gonna go ahead and nominate Ocean's 11. I've seen the original, and it's cool, but the remake has so much more sophistication to the actual filmmaking going for it.

I didn't see the original so I can't compare, but I liked 3:10 to Yuma.

Nolan's Insomnia

The Fly

The Departed (based on HK film Infernal Affair -- which was okay for me)

Casino Royale

John Carpenter's The Thing

Dawn of the Dead (arguably)

Chicago (which was based on the musical based on the 1942 movie Roxie Hart)

My Fair Lady (based on Pygmalion)

The Magnificent Seven (arguably; based on the Seven Samurais)

and ditto Ocean 11.

Hmmm...never saw the original, but I'm guessing you're probably right on that one.

The one's that didn't measure up (in my mind anyway) were:

Planet of the Apes
Halloween
Psycho
The Longest Yard
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Pink Panther (Steve Martin)
The Haunting
Down to Earth (remake of Heaven Can Wait, which was a remake as well...)

The list goes on...

Yeah, those sucks... but Heaven Can Wait was pretty good. ;)

The Thing, however, is like one of my all-time favorite movies.
