The Birdman of Alcatraz. In the movie at least; in real life Stroud was supposedly an SOB.

Charles Allnut and Rose Sayer of The African Queen. Humphrey Bogart and Katheryn Hepburn as a drunk and an uptight missionary who foil a Nazi plot. What could be more unnatural? One of my favorite all-time movies.

My vote goes to Joe Pesci's character, Leo Bernstein, in the highly under-rated movie, The Public Eye. Bernstein is a tabloid photographer in 1940's New York City (what we would refer to today as a member of the paparazzi). Only he specializes in photographing gangsters and their victims.

He uncovers a scandal involving the theft of rationed gasoline by the mob, and uses his picture taking skills to publicize the crime. It has great scenery, haunting music and an explosive climax.

Unfortunately, it's not available on DVD, but if you can find it on VHS, get it. It's a fantastic movie.

I know the Bogart and Hepburn film is considered a classic, but I would like to see a remake of The African Queen. I like many of Bogart's movies, but to me that film was done in a too lighthearted manner, at least up until near the end. I think it would be a better movie if it was done "darker".

The problem with re-making such a classic is that I doubt you could come up with anyone similar to do it. It is light because these people were desperately trying to look good and be polite in each other's eyes. Watch it again. It is pretty "Dark." Leaches! eek!

Jeez, how much darker do you want it? Nazis burn down the pastor's mission and drive him mad until he dies. Leaving Hepburn to have to bury him and find transport downriver, ends up with a dirty old alcoholic in Bogart and they have to survive leaches, white water falls, and Nazi embattlements to get to the end.

Vin Diesel in Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick.

Great fun films with surprising depth if you give them a chance.
