Does anyone here juggle freelance writing with writing for children?

I'm taking a course in proofreading/editing and have already asked my own publisher for work. I hope to expand on this income source.

I used to, but I found that the freelancing was stealing all my 'creative writing' time. Now I stick to Children's Writing, although I will still send in magazine work to Children's mags.

Yes and it's really difficult to balance. In fact my goal for this month was to focus on my books. I managed to do that, but at the expense (LOL) of my freelance writing-and income I could have had. The most difficult part of balance for me is the mental part though. Giving up freelancing is not an option at this point, and I'm not sure I'd want to do that anyway. I enjoy the more immediate feedback and of course, the more frequent pay. I'm just barely into the second year of freelancing, so still learning and establishing myself in that arena. ~Karen

I'm trying to do that now. I freelance for our local newspaper but also have been working on a PB (and other works of fiction). Of course, I'd much rather make my living via fiction, but right now the newspaper money is a sure thing. Lately, I tend to procrastinate more on the newspaper stuff, finding it difficult to tear myself away from the stories in my head.

I've already written a draft of the email I'm going to send to the newspaper editor five seconds after getting word that my book is going to be published.

I do the same thing. I thought writing freelance would help make writing my stories easier (you know, get me in that writing groove), but I've since learned that writing MG/YA and freelance are such different places creatively that they're completely different worlds. In the end, I've just had to stick with writing "my" stories early in the morning or late at night, just like I did when I had a normal job. Sigh....

I write mostly kid stuff and YA, but lately I've been focusing on just trying to pay off some old bills -- that's where freelancing comes in REALLY handy.

It means I've negelected my Real Manuscripts for a while, but at least I can say I have a regular income
