On this site we put up threads sometimes to ask a question but most often to chat. Then, we get replies.
Nice and polite ones, mean ones, informative ones, clueless ones, and that’s only for beginning.
Let’s all agree to disagree,… or disagree to agree.
I know what I know, but I do know that I don’t know everything I should know.
Many thread and replies are posted seeking eulogies; wow, gee-weez, nice, well done, great, etc. etc…. What do we learn from those?
NOTHING!
We try hard to be protective of someone’s sentiments and abstain from harsh comments,… What’s actually gained?
NOTHING!
We become so constrained by ‘niceties’ that we forget how to be truthful. And that leads us all,… NOWHERE!
We become masters of: senseless topics, ingénue declarations, non-committal ideological statements, and self-programmed inability to accept facts. We subscribe to the term of debate but only listen, and remember to keep our mouths shut. We don’t voice opinions for fear of rebuttal. We become hypocrites of epic proportions.
We conveniently forget that the World wasn’t created in one day, that without questions there’ll be no answers, that you must search in order to find, that without the trial and error element we may still be in the Stone Age.
We fine-tune into an art: being polite, not arguing, nodding approvingly and smiling condescendingly (when not watched), and above all keeping our thoughts to ourselves.
A disclaimer should be added to all topics of discussion, it should read:
“Not for those, thin skinned, who can’t stand the volley of arrows aimed back at them”
And one more thing, without: truthful expression, strong beliefs, articulated opinions, harsh fighting, vociferous attitudes, battles of wills and even direct (not merely implied) threats, we wouldn’t have a Constitution today, and forget about a First Amendment.
For challenging the ‘Gods’ (for that’s what some on this site considered themselves) I wasn’t chained to a rock but sent to the corner. I’ve met wonderful people on this site and thank those who offered constructive criticism and help with my queries and synopsis.
And for one very special person, ‘yes, I’ll try to throw that darn salt-shaker away’ (referring to what I use to ‘sprinkle’ my commas).
I wasn’t born in the English speaking World, and the language is only about third or forth on my proficiency scale. Worst is, that at times, I go back to my mixed Latin, Germanic and Slavic background, and as such have the tendency to misspell and/or use incorrect grammar.
I’ve decided to let those ‘real intellectuals’ continue (even if, for some, it may take decades to learn what I’ve chosen to forget), without my ‘pseudo-intellectual’ presence. So, I’m reading the newspaper ads and searching for a new home.
