Where should I put my pirates?

I have a short story about pirates that I want to submit to speculative fiction magazines. Except pirates aren't really speculative...they're real. I'm not sure how else to market the piece though.

Do you think SF mags would turn up their noses at pirates?

Pirates can cross various genres. If you have undead pirates, cursed gold and fighting sea dragons, it's speculative. If they're just raiding towns for booty, that's not speculative. Action adventure sounds likely, if you have swashbuckling pirate action.

Action Adventure might work, but theres only a handful of those that come up on duotrope. Hmmm. I might try some open-to-anything mags.

I think the spec fic market got glutted last year on pirates, after the Vandermeer Pirates antho and the Shimmer Pirates antho. So you're best off finding a non-spec market if you can.

Tales of the Talisman just did their "pirate" issue, but who knows, they might like to see more.

Nope. It's present day. Humorous. (At least to me.)

I saw that Tails of the Talisman pirate edition, which is why I was wondering in the first place.

Since it was just 450 words, I sent it to a flash fiction mag. I bet they get all kinds of strange stuff.
