Saw an interesting article and wondered who you all thought may be the most worthless character addition to a TV show.

I'd vote for a lot of those--Alias (but I'm okay with Lauren), Lost, Heroes and Buffy. I'll hold my judgment on 24 until I see it, although I probably won't be watching the new season at all. Last one didn't work for me on a lot of levels.

I love Lauren, Nadia AND Rachel on "Alias." Three gorgeous, talented actresses; three interesting characters. Honestly, I liked most of these characters, save for Maya and Alejandro, who were badly cast and shoehorned into a season that had too much going on already.

Fact of life: Ongoing TV shows will eventually add characters. Original actors leave, or negotiate to work fewer hours. TV has to change, period.

The only series I've seen from the list is Buffy (which was great). The whole "I suddenly have a sister, yet don't notice that she had never been there before because of magic" premise irked me.

It's difficult to add a character successfully when the reason for adding him or her has more to do with the audience demographic than moving the story forward.

Other tragic additions: Oliver in The Brady Bunch, and Seven in Married with Children.

Gee, there was a time in my life when I would have watched every one of the most current tv shows. Today, I haven't watched a single episode of any of them.

Now, if you wanted to ask me about Dynasty, Dallas, The Love Boat, or Magnum PI, I'd be all over it.

Hm, maybe I finally got myself a life. Nah. Probably not.

How about Mearth on Mork and Mindy? Didn't that just smell like desperation?

I don't watch any of the shows listed, so I'll just cast a vote for Orlando Bloom.
Ditto.

Yep.

And let's not forget cousin Oliver on the Brady Bunch. There's nothing but friggin' kids on the show, already! And you add another one?!?

Oliver wasn't really an addition, though. He was only on like 2 episodes. And in any event, I'd adopt Oliver before I watched an episode of the Flintstones with Gazoo.

ETA: Shall we all change our avatars to Cousin Oliver?

Ditto. :D

Re: post #14 -- wasn't that the same kid who played Doctor Zee in Galactica 1980? Yup, he was. Mind you, that entire series was a worthless addition to TV, let alone the character being a worthless addition to the series.
