I have just received an additional bunch of ARCs for sending out at my discretion, and in an effort to cover most of my bases, I am hoping you all can help me out by answering this question:

Other than HNS, which publications, websites and/or blogs do you faithful readers of historical fiction turn to for reviews and recommendations?

Thanks!

Home - but for how long?
Am finding this...

most useful. Didn't know there were specific review sites apart from Amazon, which can be rigged.

Don't know of any sites myself as I get the HNS weekly newsletter, the Review, the Guardian and Independent, which covers everything for me.

However do you have your own websites and are they linked to other historical writers' sites?
Some of my novelist friends have a website and blog. They link sites in small groups, running competitions and giveaways. They say this has brought lots more people to their sites. They also have a system where you can order their book from their site and claim to make small but steady sales this way.

As a soon to be published author, sending my "baby" out to be judged by strangers is actually quite nerve wracking. I'm not sure what you mean by "rigged". I suppose that on Amazon, I can seed the reviews, but the truth is, when your book is out there and if people are reading it, there is very little an author can do to rig the reviews that come in - good or bad.

But my publisher says the main thing that generates sales is word of mouth. I am trying to seek out sources that generate the kind of buzz that sells books. I'm not a big blog or website reader, but I know that blogs and sites that focus on certain genres exist, and I am looking for feedback from some of the historical fiction writers/readers here, who are more comfortable within the blogosphere, to find out which review sites they frequent when seeking recommendations for reading material.

I'm sure you've already done this, funidream, but be sure to hit local sources even if they aren't on line. In Ohio we have the Ohioana Library Association which keeps a collection of works published by Ohioans and has an author's to-do once a year. Mine is close enough to non-fiction that I also sent an ARC to the Ohio Historical Society. And one of our local legislators has a weekly newspaper column (and was tickled pink to be asked to do a review). If your book has a locality which has a higher potential for sales, be sure to look for potentials there. Puma

PDR - Thanks! The links you posted are for book centric social network sites - valuable information - since I had no idea such a thing existed. Thanks for posting!

Puma - this is good advice. My story locale (Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia) does not match my physical locale (Chicago) but the notion of tapping into the regional sources that relate to my story is one that I must explore. Thanks!

I'm always late in discovering things, but was just introduced to this website, historicalnovels.info. Great for readers like me who sometimes just get an urge to read a certain period.

I know, doesn't exactly fall under this thread's heading of review sites, but wanted to share it with you all!
