Quick question. Does anyone know approximately what cab fare was from La Guardia to Manhattan, circa 1986? Did they have the flat-rate airport fares then, or was it ala meter?

Thanks!

I can't remember the fare, but it was on the meter, and expensive. So most people took the direct bus to the East Side Terminal in Manhattan and cabbed it from there. I'm talking c. 1980 though, and I'm not sure if the East Side Terminal is still functional, or if it was still around in 1986.

Thanks. I took a cab in '96 and it was a set fare. $50...something like that. My copy editor wanted me to confirm it...

Behind you! Boo.
It's set at $45 *from* the airport right now (metered going to the airport)

I would guess less than $30 metered in 1986.
ETA: I didn't live here in 1986, so I may be wrong.

It was between $30 and $40, as I recall it, and it was metered, not a flat rate. I remember when they introduced the flat airport rates; it was in 1989 or 1990.

You could probably find the exact amount in The Andy Warhol Diaries, because he kept careful note of that kind of thing.

Last month I paid $ 45.00 flat plus tolls
I vaguely remember back in 1986 but think it would have been around $ 25.00 flat plus tolls

I think the only flat fare is from JFK to Manhattan; the LaGuardia fare is metered, if I recall correctly. (This makes sense, since the trip from LaGuardia to Midtown is MUCH shorter than the trip from JFK to Midtown.)

Why don't you call the New York TLC - the Taxi and Limousine Commission? They'd probably know.
