I just submitted the first chapter of my novel (re-worked into a short story) to Baen's Universe; wish me luck. Reading through the slush in Baen's Bar was a real eye opener and taught me a lot. 1. There are so many submissions I don't know how they keep track. 2. A lot of stories have a great opening paragraph but then deflate by the second page. 3. Despite point number 2, there are A LOT of talented writers out there. Certainly more talented than me. Oh well. If you write Sci Fi and havent checked out Baen's Bar, I highly recommend it - but beware. After looking through the Universal Slush Pile postings, it seriously made me think that maybe I should just stick with my day job!

Good luck! Tell me how it goes! I've been considering submitting something to Baen's Bar, but most of it is pretty soft science fiction (practicaly fantasy, even the hardest of it), so I'm not sure I want to stick my neck out...

I second Gray Rose. They publish the full range. I chose not to go through the slush bar, because I'm not convinced (yet) there's any advantage to it. Plus, if you go the route of standard submissions, you get your first response within two weeks and can track your progress through their website. It's really cool.

Thanks everyone who wished me luck!

Yes, good luck, of course. There's some good stuff in the Bar, but there's some abysmal stuff too. Or maybe it's just my bias against mil sf ;)

Are you hoping for an Introducing slot?

I'm still waiting for my first professional rejection. I'll have a thread in the Goals and Accomplishments forum when that happens!

Tburger, good luck and let us know how it goes.

MumblingSage - they accept all kinds of spec. Try them - what do you have to lose?

Gray: Baen's guidelines say that you usually get the initial response in two weeks - do you know if this is true? Or is it more like that's their goal but they only reach it sometimes? Thanks!

Good luck, T. I know how you feel. I've just recently submitted my first four stories, one published, two rejected, and one still out. Let us know what happens.
