I was reserching squids for my stories and learned about the Caribbean Reef Squid. I've found a few good articles on it, but they don't tell me some things I need to know. Like if these squids ever get washed up on shore, or if a wave could deposit one or more on the deck of a ship. But most importantly, is this species edible? (No, I won't eat them, but my characters might.) Thanks!

ETA Just found out from the FDA website that they are indeed edible. Sorry to bother you guys on that point. Know any 17th-18th Century squid recipes, by the way, ha ha?

A seafood chowder would be common back then--milk based, or boiled in water with potatoes, carrots, turnips, onions.

Hi AZ Dawn, I've run across this squid in some research for a free lance article. I got the impression they were pretty small. If a person wanted to eat them, they'd need quite a few for just one person. Feeding a crew....? Like the other guy said, it would have to be a stew or chowder. I don't see why they couldn't wash up on a beach, or even a ship during a storm.

Thanks, Desert Author! I had to get a couple of rulers to visualize it, but it looks like lengthwise they're slightly longer than my hand. Not horribly small to me, but for someone who larger and hungry...

a message board devoted to squid fishing: http://www.squidfish.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=698

catching cute little squid in a net: (look down below, they catch them to kiss them apparently) http://www.thecephalopodpage.org/InternRowenaDay.php

It looks like they are small and they look like they live in shallow water (the Caribbean is not very deep in the reef area) so I am not sure how big the actual waves could get. The reef is the reef because they waves have not churned everything up. As far as edibility, even the "giant" type squid eventually are eaten. Scientists are like that. They catch things, tear them apart and then try to taste them if they are not too rotten. Argentinian squid are the ones found in stores, but I'll bet taste wise, a squid id a squid. They cant be very poisonous as you see the scientists kissing them (they kiss them, then they eat them.)
