Hi,

New to the forum, but not to absolute write site. Actually, I've been getting the ezine for some time, just didn't know this exists.

I'm a children's writer, and do some local newspaper column stuff, too. But, am stumbling around on this site, trying to figure things out.

Anyone have any suggestions or tips on how to best navigate? Or, perhaps, your favorite part of this site and how to use it.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome to AbsoluteWrite's Forums, Katiebug57!:hi:

I don't know all the forums just yet -- the board is just so huge! -- but some forums I'd suggest would be the Writing Studios, the Bewares and Background Check section, and the 'Get With The Genre' boards. They're probably the most informational I've personally experienced.

There are links posted at the top of whatever page you happen to be on, to the left-hand side. Each one of them points to the forums and sub-forums you're at. Every one of those little links takes you to the proper forum that you want to go to.

Also, on the boards themselves there are, to the left-hand side, links to the proper forums. On the left-hand side of the forum listing, is the most recently added post to that particular forum. You can click on that word directly to take you to the proper page and/or post you're looking for.

Another cool thing is that, when you see a member's name, clicking that name will bring up a menu allowing you to see that particular member's public information. Their profile, their avatar, etc.

One thing I've noticed is that after you've posted a message, using the 'Back' button on your browser will take you back to the message you were just trying to post, not to the board you were just navigating. I've learned to use the buttons on the AW site more than the buttons on my browser -- with the exception of the 'Refresh' button on my browser, as it's helpful in seeing new posts on the particular thread I'm reading. When you're on a particular page of the site, it does not show new posts on that particular page unless you refresh the page.

Anyway, it's good to have you with us. I hope the information I've given you helps to some extent, and have fun on the boards.

Hey Katie! :welcome: Welcome to AW. I think the best way to find your way around the site is to do some exploring. The forums have a lot to offer. If you have any problems or questions, just post them on FAQ's section and the nice people here will help you out any way we can. I hope to see you around.

Welcome! Glad you're here, and take some time to look around. :) There is a room just for kiddy-lit, and lots of good information everywhere else, too!

Thanks!

Hey, thanks everyone! I feel warmly welcomed . . . although (!) "kiddie lit" is real writing, too! Same rules of good writing still apply, even if it's for the younger folks.

Anyhow, appreciate the welcome. I look forward to finding my way around. It's hard to believe I've been receiving the absolute write newsletter for so long and hadn't a clue this forum existed.

oh good HEAVENS!!! I absolutely did NOT mean to imply any disrespect for children's books or writers thereof.

I absolutely agree with you that it's "real" writing--in fact, I think good children's fiction takes a really fine degree of control!

"kiddie lit" was just grad-school shorthand, to save a little typing and formality...absolutely no derogatory connotations intended, whatsoever. :)

I apologize humbly and immediately if it seemed that way...

Hey, no offense taken! Sometimes you never know what a person means . . . ! This may sound kinda dumb, but when I first get on these sort of forums, and haven't gotten to know the good folks yet, I get nervous and say things I shouldn't. Take this as one of those things.

I'd never heard the phrase "kiddie lit" used before except in a derogatory fashion!

So, I, too, apologize!

This is a fairly well lit and policed forum, safe for window shoppers to wander around. I am sure you will settle in very quickly!

Can anyone tell me how to post my pix from a jpg (I think) file off of Word onto my profile here?

Thanks,
