I wrote a short story based on a minor character in the novel I'm shopping right now. I planned to tuck it away until after the novel sold and maybe put it on my website as an extra, but I found an upcoming anthology that might be perfect for it. Should I go ahead and try to sell the story now or hold on to it?

Has anyone done this before?

Cheering you all on!
There's probably no problem with you publishing the short story now. Especially as it's a minor character, but even if it was a short about the MC that otherwise has nothing to do with the novel, I think it'd be okay. I'm not any kind of expert or anything, though.

Here and there
If it's a completely original short story (i.e. not a scene that appears in the novel you're currently shopping) then I'd definitely say you should try and get it in the anthology.

Good luck!

Thanks, both of you. Yes, this story is completely different, showing the childhood of one of the fringe characters from the novel. If it doesn't make the anthology, though, I might just tuck it away and wait until the novel gets published.
