Does anyone know of agents who are (seriously) actively seeking clients?

All of them*.

Provided said clients have some that the agent is absolutely sure he or she can sell.

They don't need to seek clients out, however, because reputable agents get 100-500 (or more) queries a week. They have all the potential clients they can handle.

If an agent knocks on your door without you just having published a short story or what have you? Run. Fast.

*With the possible exception for agents for mega-authors like Steel or Grisham, who have enough on their plate without adding more clients to it.

I think the key to finding an agent is a mixture of accuracy by volume, talent, luck, and potentially a sacrifice the dark gods.

That and very good writing.

Maggie, I assume you're checking the usual sites like agentquery.com? If you do an advanced search there, you can check off various options such as that the agent is looking for new clients.

job

In the end, it's just you and the manuscript

My advice would be to pay $20 a month for a few months of Publisher's Market. See who is selling what. What do they like?

You're not looking for an agent who is looking for writers. You're looking for the agent who is looking for you. Find that agent.
