View Full Version : Pimpin' a web-zine and issuing a challenge

So the other day I was trolling through Duotrope and came upon this publication for the first time--Necrotic Tissue (http://www.necrotictissue.com/). They didn't offer to pay much ($25.00) but they also offered a neat t-shirt. Who wouldn't want a t-shirt that said "Necrotic Tissue?" I submitted. They rejected. But I'm not bitter. :e2teeth: Not any more, anyhow. :D 'Cause here's the thing about them:
While we welcome professional writers, our goal is to assist new writers by providing personal responses with any rejections and some recommendations for improving their story. Submissions that are very close but need some work may be selected for a rewrite with assistance from one of our editors.Pretty neat, huh? I also noticed something else:
Our long-term goal is to get enough subscribers to draw web site advertising for the publication so that we can increase our payments to professional rates (which are currently 5 cents per word) and to be considered a professional publication by the HWA.Also pretty neat. We need more pubs like that. So I'd encourage you to take a look. Subscribing is free and the stories I've read so far are pretty good. I'd encourage everyone to support them. It's good for us too.
This brings me to the challenge part of this post.
Along with regular short stories and flash, Necrotic Tissue also accepts 100 word stories. This from their website:
The second length is The 100 word story. 100 words precisely, not 99 or less and not 101. For purpose of word count, the 100 word story includes the title and the body of the story. The writer's name and even the word "by" which usually appears after the writer's name is not included. Don't trust any word processing word count tool, you should manually count. The pay is the same--$25.00 and a t-shirt.
What I'm suggesting is this. Let's write a bunch of 100 word stories, then put them up in the Horror section of SYW. We'll crit each other 'til we drop, and then we'll have something to submit to them (or anyone else we want to) when they reopen for submissions on July 1st.
No prizes this time. Just a chance to stretch your talents a little bit more, and maybe wind up with that neat t-shirt.
Who's game?

You see, Haggis, this is why I BEGGED mother not to drown you, even though you were runtly at the time.
My daughter would love that tee shirt, and $25.00 would get me good and happy (not to mention free nachos) at 'Joes'.
But, may a person write more than 100 words? I'm a bid cranially impaired and have a hard time with anything under 1,000.
Do. Not. Say. It.

More than 1000? Absolutely. :)
But for this challenge? Not on your life. :e2teeth:
That would have been too easy.
Haggis, I think I like this idea.
So... did they give helpful advice?

I'm tentatively in. I'm working on 4 novel WIPs simultaneously, but these kinds of challenges are great for when I need a break. So...if I doodle one out, I'm in. If not, I'll crit what others put up. (I mean, I'd do that anyway, but, you know what I mean...or maybe you don't...but that's so like you, isn't it?)

Pike, I worry about your affinity for whips. Almost as much as I worry about my affinity for blood.
As you can see in my entry here (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101607):
ETA: Pike, you rock. Now I has linky!
I figured out how to do that by highlighting a word and then hitting the "add link" button. Then a window pops up and you can add the link which will imbed your link to the highlighted word.
I almost sound like I know what I'm talking about. Almost.

I just stumbled across this thread and wanted to second the pimpin' of Necrotic Tissue.
I subbed one story to them back in Oct/Nov of last year... I was rejected, but got some really good comments from them.
So I had another idea floating around, polished it up, and subbed it in January. "The Silent Treatment" will be in their July issue (okay, so I had to pimp myself a little, too :)).
The editors are great - the response time is reasonable and once they pick up your story, they respond quickly to emails. They pay super promptly and the t-shirt is indeed awesome (I got that within like a week of my acceptance). They're great people to work with.
I'd like to try the challenge, but I've only ever written one 100-word story and I'm pretty sure it broke my brain.

My piece was rejected too.
I went against the grain though and submitted a longer yarn.
Here's the possible form bits of the rejection:
We at Necrotic Tissue received your submission, "Title". After considered review by our editorial staff, we have decided not to publish your story.
{Personalized: Why rejection and positive feedback.}
We hope you will submit again during this or another submission period. Please subscribe to receive our free magazine if you haven't already done so. Be sure to check us out @ www.myspace.com/necrotictissuemag. We need as many friends as we can get.
If you would, log our response time at www.duotrope.com. While we have decided not to select your story for publication, we work hard to respond to writers in a timely manner. This allows you to submit your story again, quickly to another market. Reporting response times allows us attract writers and helps writers make good decisions about where they want to submit, thank you.
That look familiar?

Got mine this morning. The funny thing is, the reason for rejection they cited used almost as many words as my story. :D But I have to say, it was one of the most informative rejections I ever received. Kudos, to NT--both for the speed of the rejection and for the helpful feedback.
Now...
I've got to find something to do with that little gem. Either another flash pub, or, maybe, expand the thing into a longer story.
yep, they sure word rejections, nicely.
Though mine was "a scene, rather than a story, and had no plot to speak of,"
there was "good action in it." And besides, "100 word shorts aren't easy to write."
(A lot better hearing this, than that it outrightly rotted.)
Back to the drawing board,
but a little wiser by the experience.

I sent in Bill and Lil's Wild Animal Preserve (version 1). It was a spur of the moment decision. On second thought, I don't think it's the best I had, but ... if it's accepted, it was a good choice; if not, I've got others (including some longer ones, more than 500 words).

I'm with dobiwon - I sent in mine late Sunday night and haven't heard anything yet. Perhaps the Sunday night entries have been lost in a black void? What if they make us dive into that horrible black void to retrieve them? Oh no! Is it worth it for a tee shirt?

Mine's in an even deeper, darker void. I've been waiting since the first.
I hate waiting.
G-mail's still empty. Yea! This is fun having so many to hold hands with, huh?

Alas, the only other short I have is the squick-fest, and I subbed that to Chiaroscuro. Both places state "no simultaneous subs." So my hopes are on the latter and I'm waiting to see one of us in that t-shirt! :)
I'm still hanging in the "void". Subbed mine on the first but after having my last sub to another mag several months ago get lost in the internet I'm not holding my breath. Ah, crap. Now I'm going to need a triple chocolate stout. Just checked my email. Here's what they told me:
We at Necrotic Tissue received your submission, "Same Time Tomorrow". After considered review by our editorial staff, we have decided not to publish your story.
We truly enjoyed your story but we had to take the best ten out of the 44 we have received so far. Be assured, you made the first round of our 100-Word contest.
We hope you will submit again for the contest, there are still 20 some days left. Winners and finalists will be notified and announced on our MySpace page on August 1st.
I'm tempted to try again, but I'd have to start from scratch since I don't have another ready. They are nice there, though. And very quick to respond. But I'd have felt better if they'd told me 10 out of 444 instead of 44.

Maybe it's my analytical mind (the blessing/curse of a scientist) but I envision this scenerio at NT:
1) Pick out the 10 best from what's available
2) Rank these 10
3) When a new submission comes in, compare it to #10
___A) If the new one is better, reject #10 and add 'new' to the 10 best
___B) If not, go to step 3
4) Go to step 2
Repeat until July 31.
In other words, no one is safe until August 1.
Corollaries:
1) The higher you are on the 10 best list, the better.
2) The longer you stay on the 10 best list, the less time you have to resubmit if you get replaced by a new one.
3) The more #1 applies, the more #2 applies.

That's the name of the game and all we can do is continue to beat our brains/words to perfection. But I'm loving the fact that as writers these folks understand the fight, not that I expect that to happen again soon. *sigh* Ah, well, it's made this whole thing that much more exciting.

Crap, Scip. Sorry, man. :(
For what it's worth, I re-read all the 100 word stories from their last edition. I thought two of them were knock down, dead brilliant. I thought most of them were pretty good. I thought two of them weren't very good at all. No, I'm not saying which ones. But that goes to show you--different strokes, and all that. We've still got to catch the right editor at the right time with the right story. Sometimes it clicks, sometimes it doesn't.
You got another one to send? :D
I wasn't gonna do it, but I did it anyhow. Got another written and I'll sub it after I (hopefully) get a few crits.

I did the same thing and really only liked a few of them. Its all about the right person at the right time though.

I'm sorry to hear that. Yeah, sometimes it seems like a matter of luck just to hit the right note with someone over there. Why don't you whip up another one? SYW is a little busy with some new ones, and there's plenty of time to submit again. Come on, join us with another one and I bet Haggis will promise not to scrape out your eyes!

What's REALLY sad is this: If we (or at least if I) had been told at the point of submission that a reply could take up to a month I would have thought Wow. A month? That's fast. These people are on the ball. If subbing novels has taught me anything at all, it's that a month is nothing, nothing in the publishing world. A sneeze of time. An eyeblink. Less, even.
But it sure feels like a long a** time when yer smack in the middle of it. :)

You're absolutely right, David. I've got two out there (not NT) over four months, one five months. I finally queried on that one and they're still considering. So I figure I'll give it another couple of months. But we really get sucked into this short response time.

Unfortunately, we at Necrotic Tissue, do not encourage or publish stories with the themes of victimization of self or others, which is clearly stated in our submission guidelines. There is enough horror in the world of which we can write about, without it being at the expense of ourselves.
We hope you find a market for your writing.

My co-worker and I enjoy an adversarial, pranky kinda relationship, but I have the advantage because her comp knowledge is...limited. So one day while she was on break I changed her autocorrect settings in Word.
Every time she typed the word the, Word changed it to read David is the coolest.
See? There's a great, universally acceptable sentence. Will it fit your piece? Feel free to use it, if you want. ;)

c.e.lawson
07-16-2008, 11:08 AM
I'm sorry, Wendy. I didn't see which story you were talking about, but I looked up the NT guidelines again. Here they are:
To get your story accepted, you need to meet the following criteria:
* Stories should be well crafted, have merit and make an impact.
* 1st person will be considered, but are less preferred.
* We will not take any stories that deal with the abuse, torture or rape of children or women. Also, stories that depict woman as helpless or powerless victims stand little chance.
* We don't like memoir or journals, it would have to be incredible to be accepted.
* No deus ex machina, that is rank amateur and you can do better.
* If you have THE best serial killer story ever, maybe. Gore for gore’s sake is not our thing, but this is an ezine for adults, so if it is intrinsic to the story, do it well. Slasher stories where only the virgins live is not ok, sex is a necessary evil.
I hope my monster under the bed doesn't count as an abuse of children story.

I did not submit flash siction to them, but subbed them one of my 4000 words shorts and was rejected....
We at Necrotic Tissue received your submission, "Blink". After considered review by our editorial staff, we have decided not to publish your story.
This was a good read, but we feel it takes too long, or is too heavy on the front end. Have you thought to cut it back by maybe a full third, allowing the characterization of Driz and Val to be revealed through their immediate, present tense actions to move the story along? My only other personal opinion on your piece would be, don't rely on pop culture references - allow your writing to show us, the reader, how things are for the main character. We wondered if this were meant as a slip-stream piece, which is a new genre for my experience. Personally, I loved the depiction of the under-the-influence of a new drug. Watch out for those 'scrips.'
