When you're naming a model of gun, do you spell out the numbers or write them out? Same with calibers of ammo.

9 mm or nine millimeter (I'm pretty sure it's the second)
Barrett Model 99 or Barrett Model Ninety-Nine (less sure on the second one)
.45 caliber or forty-five caliber (still unsure)

And while I'm at it, how do you pronounce Barrett? BARR ett or barr ETT?

Generally, if it's dialogue I spell it out, if it's narrative I use numbers.

Are you referring to the Baretta (current 9mm sidearm of the US military?) That would be BAR et ta. (Italian manufacturer) Just like the old TV show.

9mm is the standard way its written in the Tech and Field Manuals. For example:

5.56mm round for the M-16/M-4
.50 caliber for the M-2 .50 caliber machine gun
9mm for the H&K MP-5 sub-machinegun
etc.

(Knew those 15 years in the military would come in handy.)

Hmm, don't know off the top of my head.

I'll see what I can find out at work tomorrow.

The joys of being a defense contractor, what I don't know from my days in the service, I can usually find out pretty quickly from the guys I do work with.

It's definitely .22, .35, and .45, and a David Morrell novel in reach mentions a "Russian Makarov 9-mm pistol".

It largely depends on the publiscation. Sporting magazines ALWAYS have me use numbers. Anywhere else, it's usually numbers in narrative, words in dialogue. We speak words, not numbers, so this rule flies almost everywhere.

But it really isn't terribly important. This is one of those things the editor will change, or not, depending on in-house style.

One thing to note. Many seem to write M-16, including some, not all, sporting magazines, but if you look at the military guides, there is no hyphen. It's simply M16.

No, that's the Beretta. The Barrett is a .50 caliber rifle.

BAR-rett

It's a family of rifles made by the Barrett Armament's Co, located in Tennessee.

the Model 99 is a .50 caliber single-shot sniper rifle.

I didn't get a lot of information on that, but I did print out information on the Model 95, Model 82 and the Barrett 25mm Payload rifle, to include pictures, from Janes Infantry Weapons for you if you need/are interested in it.

I can't e-mail them to you (I have hard copy not soft copy), but if you want, I'll certainly stick them in snail mail for you.

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much, but it's not necessary to mail them. I use manufacturer websites, places turned up by Google, and this gun site for my gun facts.
