Sci Fi on The Rock, St John's Newfoundland, April 19th/20th 2008
I got back from Sci Fi on the Rock at the weekend. I had a great time, sold a bunch of books and met some great new folks.
The event was heavily Sci Fi oriented (Doh!) and I'd forgotten just how seriously some genre fans take these cons. Seeing people wandering around in costume as Star Wars Stormtroopers, or Star Trek officers was a very strange experience, and seeing a Klingon take a pee may well have scarred me for life, if I hadn't turned around and come face to face with Darth Vader in the next urinal.
Several games companies had set up huge screens around the room, and free plays were available on some newly launched games, so it was a noisy experience. These guys take their gaming seriously. There was some very heated discussion over the latest Star Wars arcade game, and a new board game that seemed to involve around 500 cards and twenty different dice attracted an awful lot of old D&Ders.
The star guest was the guy who played Boba Fett in Star Wars, and he got a lot of attention from the fans. There was a dinner available with him on Saturday night, but I prefered to just hang out in the bar and talk to some of the folk from the writers panels.
I got to meet Janet McNaughton, a well known Newfie writer, and discovered that we had actually met before in Edinburgh several years ago. She's going to introduce me to other writers in Newfoundland, so it was well worth the trip just for that.
The highlight for me was the panels I hosted. I did a writer's circle with Janet, where she was very informative about the state of Canadian publishing, and I did two on my own: "Getting your novel published", and "Rational explanations for Supernatural Beings" Both were well attended, and the audience didn't laugh in the wrong places, so I guess I did OK.
And I got invited back next year, so I must have done something right.
