What genre would a novel about businessmen trying to outwit each other in order to become the tycoon of the industry fall in?

What industry?

If it's railroads then historical.
If it's mining asteroids then science fiction.
If it's to own the most potion stores in the town then it's fantasy. (Sorry fantasy that's the best I could come up with.)
If it's McDonald's or, modern day chain store of your choice here, then it could be literary.

Well if you have clandestine type activities, mixed with spying, espionage, break-ins, car chases (a little action), you might have yourself a thriller. It realy depends on the amount of action and risk, though.

And if it's modern-day society and the skulduggery is mainly in the boardroom, then it's contemporary or mainstream. Not everything has to have a "genre". The biggest section in my local bookstore is "Fiction".
