I reread a section of my WIP I sent to this writing program at U of Iowa, and I caught a paragraph indent mistake, and this following sentence.

Westerfield Academy for Girls accepts girls with a troubled life.

It should be: girls with troubled lives....

Do you think a writing program for HS students would be too strict to not let a few mistakes pass? Or do they look at other things as well such as plot, characters, and all that jazz?

I'm kind of nervous about this since I really want to get accepted to that program. I'll have to wait and see when I get a letter on April 1.....

I think 'girls with a troubled life' is ok. Each one has only one life, I think. Yes, I'm sure it sounds best the way you've done it.

If they didn't allow for at least a few errors, no one would be accepted. Who the heck ever submits anything that is mistake-free?

Or do they look at other things as well such as plot, characters, and all that jazz?
My guess is that these areas would count far more toward a writer's skills than a few grammatical missteps. Ask any agent or editor.

So stop worrying and relax. You'll do fine. :)

Yeah, I think you'll be fine. Especially if SK says so. He is, after all, chock full of wisdom. Honestly, though, such mistakes are minor, I'm sure they're much more concerned with your command writing style, voice, and creativity then minor typos. Why not submit your work to the Share Your Work forum here at AW and see what kind of advice our kind folks have for you?

Much good luck, KC36. I have a feeling you'll do just fine and Silver & CB know what they're talking about!
